I thought it would be fun to place a letterbox by throwing it into the Pacific Ocean and seeing where it ended up, then hiding it nearby. Since I did not get a chance to go out in a boat, this exercise will be done theoretically and solved mathematically, with a little help from Pythagoras.
I left Netarts on a boat traveling southwest, and after 10 miles I released the letterbottle. The ocean current made it travel due east for 8 miles, where it landed on a beach just south of one of the three Capes. I was able to calculate the distance from Netarts (and so can you), and thereby determine which Cape State Park the letterbottle is in. There are several other boxes in this park.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
