Lewis and Clark entered Oregon in mid-October, 1805 as they traveled down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. They established winter quarters near Astoria by building Fort Clatsop in December, 1805, and remained there until starting for home on March 23, 1806. Along the way they passed present-day Hat Rock State Park, The Dalles and Columbia River Gorge. In early November, 1805 they camped and explored near the mouth of the Sandy River where it spills into the Columbia River. Today this area is Lewis & Clark State Recreation Site and is home to this microbox.
