In May of 1950, a human-caused fire ravaged 17,000 acres of forest in the Capitan Gap of New Mexico, and it was during this fire that a tiny bear cub with badly burned feet was found by one of the fire fighters. While being nursed back to health he was given the name Smokey Bear, and soon became a star by appearing on posters everywhere about fire prevention. He lived the rest of his life at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., but when he died in 1976, he was flown back to his birthplace of Capitan, New Mexico and buried in Smokey Bear Park. For a small fee you can come here to pay your respects to Smokey, and find this microbox.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
