Smith Falls, the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, is located in Smith Falls State Park on the Niobrara River. Surrounded by paper birch, aspen and ponderosa pine, a spring-fed creek tumbles 75 feet down a rock wall to create the falls. The diversity of fauna and flora, combined with the beauty of the waterfall makes Smith Falls a truly unique Nebraska landmark. Entry fee is $2.50, and camping and picnic facilities are provided on the north side of the river, which can be crossed by using the new foot bridge that was completed in 1996, or by canoe (provided at the park office). Once across the river, a short hike takes visitors to the boardwalk path. Follow the roar of the water to find Smith Falls tucked away in this surprisingly beautiful wilderness setting, then look for this letterbox.

Directions:

Smith Falls State Park is located 15 miles east of Valentine off Highway 12 and a gravel road.

Clues:

Go to park office and pay fee, then walk out back porch and find the trail to Smith Falls. You will cross the Niobrara River and come to a wooden walkway that will lead you to the falls. After enjoying the falls, return down the walkway to a place where it turns right or goes straight. Continue straight and go down the 5 steps and sit on the bottom one. Reach behind and under the right (east) side of the step. The box is all the way under with a rock on top. Please re-cover well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
