After shoving off from the Wood River, Illinois site on May 14, 1804, it took Clark and his men more than two days to reach St. Charles, Missouri. Lewis joined them a few days later and they departed on May 21. They moved slowly upriver through Jefferson City and then Kansas City, and on July 4, 1804 arrived at an oxbow lake near present-day Lewis & Clark Village. Today the lake is known as Lewis and Clark Lake and borders Lewis and Clark State Park, the home of this letterbox. Just as in Lewis and Clark's day, waterfowl still flock to this oxbow lake and fishing is good. The park also has picnic sites and camping. While here, be sure to look for Baby Bear's L/C - Missouri River letterbox.
NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
