From September 12-21, 1805, Lewis and Clark followed the Lolo Trail, a historic Indian trade and hunting route, across the Bitterroot Mountains to the Clearwater River. They returned by this route in 1806, and the Lolo Trail is now a National Historic Landmark. Today you can roughly follow this trail by traveling Highway 12 along the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River. The two-lane highway winds through a narrow canyon between forest and river, with Lewis and Clark interpretive signs and picnic areas along the route. The Lolo Pass Visitor Center is a great place to stop for information, and to find this microbox.

Directions:

From Lowell, Idaho, head east on Hwy 12 for about 70 miles to the Lolo Pass Visitor Center near the Montana border.

Clues:

Park by the visitor center and walk behind it to the Wetland Trail. Cross the bridge and head southeast past the Wetland Trail sign to a boardwalk. After crossing the boardwalk you will come to a jct. Go right and continue past one bench and stop at the second bench on the left. Turn left (south) onto a small dirt trail and walk about 20 steps. Look right (southwest) for 2 medium and 1 small tree growing together about 5 steps off the trail. The microbox is hidden on their right side base under a rock and pine needles. Please re-cover well.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
