In July, 1804, Lewis and Clark entered the area now known as Iowa. They traveled upriver past today's town of Council Bluffs until on August 10 they arrived at a narrow oxbow lake in Iowa near the present day Lewis and Clark State Park. They spent some time there exploring the region and making observations on the geographical conditions, plants and animals in the area. Today the lake is called Blue Lake and the park is a popular area for family picnics, hiking, fishing and camping. There is also a full-sized reproduction of Lewis and Clark's keelboat, "Discovery", along with this letterbox and Baby Bear's L/C - Sgt. Floyd letterbox. On August 20, they arrived at present day Sioux City, where Sergeant Floyd died, probably from a burst appendix. He was the expedition's only fatality and he was buried at the top of a high round hill overlooking the river. Today Floyd's grave is marked by a tall obelisk called the Sergeant Floyd Monument which still overlooks the river and Sioux City.
