SPECIAL THANKS TO KIM FOR REPLACING THE LOG

Written in 1958, Yertle The Turtle still offers a valuable lesson in humility. King Yertle's story leads off with his attempt to build a bigger kingdom on the backs of his loyal subjects (literally) and ends with "underlings" demanding their rights. You can find this microbox dedicated to the foolish turtle in the Merritt Island NWR, on the Palm Hammock trail. The refuge is located on part of the Kennedy Space Center and provides a buffer zone for NASA, while preserving habitat for natural wildlife diversity. NOTE: The refuge is closed 4 days prior to a launch day, so check for the latest information before you go.

Directions:

From I95 go east on US Route 406 to the Merritt Island NWR. Bear right on US Route 402 and go past the visitor center about 1 mile to the Hammock Trails paking lot on the left.

Clues:

From the kiosk map, go left on the Palm Hammock trail for 75 steps. Look for a palm tree 7 steps off the trail to the right. The camo microbox is within a cut frond about 3 feet off the ground under a rock. Please re-cover well. NOTE: Mosquitoes can be bad, so put on bug spray or bring the box back to the car if not hiking more of the trail.

NOTE: Always take adequate precautions (such as prodding with a stick and/or wearing gloves) before reaching into dark crevasses and holes in the wild. Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
