TX Treasures LB Event

Organized By: Silver Eagle

TX Treasures LB Event Stamp

Come to our 5th TX Annual LB Event (TALE) as we celebrate Texas Treasures. This includes people, places, objects, customs, food, drink or just about anything that makes our State great. Us Texans are quite proud of our State, and what better way to honor it than with little treasures of our own. Many letterboxes celebrating TX have already been placed around the state, but there should be plenty of ideas for new boxes to be placed for this Event. If nothing comes to mind, just think of something big, because everything is bigger in Texas!

Date: Saturday, 03/01/08
Time: 10:00 AM - 06:00 PM
Location: Group Picnic Pavilion in South Shore Park On Lake Bastrop - Bastrop, TX
Directions: From Austin, take Hwy 71 East to Bastrop, then a left onto Hwy 95 and a quick right onto Hwy 21 East. Go approximately two miles and turn left onto South Shore Road (CR 352). Continue on South Shore Road for a few miles and the entrance will be on your right. Stop at the entrance station to pay the fee ($3/adult), get a map and ask for directions to the Group Pavilion. It is by the swimming area.
Details: I have reserved the Pavilion for all day and it will hold 100 people. It is covered and has electric and water outlets, barbecue pit, picnic tables, and access to restrooms. Baby Bear is making the Event Stamp and I will bring name tags so we can remember each other better. We are both bringing chili, so if you want to participate in the potluck lunch be sure to bring some food to share and list it in the database table called TALE5 Potluck on the TX Talklist. Other things to consider bringing include: drinks, letterbox materials, clues to boxes in area, boxes to place & paper and pen to record clues for others to follow, trash bags, paper plates, plastic forks, bug spray, kid games and anything else to make the day more fun. If you are planning to camp, be sure to make reservations early. Baby Bear and I will be camping on Friday and Saturday nights, so bring a chair and come by for campfire stories and relaxing conversation without the frenzy of exchanges. You may R.S.V.P. on Atlas Quest.
Accommodations: There is camping available in South Shore Park and in nearby North Shore Park on Lake Bastrop. Camping is also available in nearby Bastrop SP and Buescher SP. Hotels and other accommodations can be found in the nearby towns of Bastrop in Bastrop County or Austin in Travis County.
Event Activities: Exchanging, letterboxing, and LB Match Game, where you try to match a letterboxer with their box. Besides the boxes placed for this Event, there are many existing boxes in nearby Bastrop SP and Buescher SP, including Lost Pines, the oldest active letterbox in TX.
Other Nearby Activities: If you have extra time, I highly recommend visiting Austin. Besides all the letterboxes there are many things to do, including free tours of the capitol, playing at Zilker Park and eating at great restaurants.

Post Event

The weather was sunny and warm for our 5th TX Annual LB Event and we had about 60 letterboxers and a few LSS attend. People came from all over Texas, along with a few from New Mexico and Louisiana. The atmosphere was like that of a family reunion and an ice cream social all in one, with good food and conversation, and it was fun to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. After eating, the questions for the LB Match game were passed out and the stamp carving demos were started. Baby Bear and Boots Tex did the honors and everyone, new and experienced, learned a few things. Dewberry and Mother Of Five showed up soon after and brought some "ice cold" refreshment, along with a great stamp carved by Dewberry in honor of Ruby Tuesday. It was a great tribute to a well-beloved letterboxer. The rest of the afternoon was spent looking for boxes in the park until darkness forced us back to the pavilion for cleanup and the conclusion of the LB Match game. The winner was Dewberry, with help from Mother Of Five and Puddle Splasher, and Gryzzled Gryphon came in second for the second year in a row. We then adjourned to our campsite where about 20 people gathered to share our campfire. Fearless Fox made us peach cobbler in a Dutch oven and it was great. We also held a wake for Gryzzled Gryphon's Cranberry Cruiser and toasted it with Cranberry Meade. Many stories were told as the fire slowly burned down until it was time for bed around 10:30. It had been a long day but most of us agreed it had been the best TX LB Event yet!
