Since this letterbox is missing and I won't be able to replace it, I have turned it into a Walk-On letterbox. California's second largest city and the United States' seventh largest, San Diego is known for it's near-idyllic climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches and dazzling array of world-class family attractions, such as the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California. The climate and beaches support year-round outdoor recreation, such as surfing, boating, swimming and sailing. There are also great places to go hiking, such as Cabrillo National Monument and Torrey Pines State Reserve, which contains our nation's rarest pine tree and is the home of this letterbox. It is open daily from 8:00 am to sunset and there is a $6.00 parking fee per car. San Diego is one of my favorite cities to visit and I always see sailboats in my mind when I think of it.

Directions:

Torrey Pines State Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, California, north of San Diego. From I5, exit on Carmel Valley Road and drive west for about 1.5 miles till you reach the Coast Highway 101. Turn left and proceed along the beach for about a mile. The park entrance is on your right just before the highway begins to climb the Torrey Pines grade. After entering the park, drive up the hill about .2 miles to the Guy Flemming Trailhead and park.

Clues:

The Guy Flemming trail is only a 2/3 mile loop and has many Torrey Pines to see along with great views of the Pacific Ocean. Proceed counter-clockwise (take a right at the trailhead board) and go about 200 yards to an overlook with a bench a few yards to the right of the trail. Enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean by the park entrance below. When you are ready to find the letterbox, return to the main trail and go left (east), which is back the way you came, for 20 paces. You will be between two signs on your left saying "Area Closed" and "Stay On Trail". Look opposite on your right (south) and find a bush under the low hanging branches of a Torrey Pine. The box is hidden within under pine needles. Please be discreet and re-cover well when done stamping, then continue on the loop trail back to the trailhead.
