SULTAN IBRAHIM GIRL'S SCHOOL
Sultan
Ibrahim Girls' School (SIGS) began as an afternoon session school accupying the
building of the Ngee Heng Primary Boy's School. A year later it shifted to its
present premises. SIGS was named after HRH Sultan Ibrahim and was opened
officially by HRH in October 1939. It began with 4 classes and about 100 pupils.
The Headmistress was Miss C.E. Renton who administered with a staff of 11 local
people.
The coming of the Second World War in December 1941 interrupted the running of
the school. Then the school only had the main block with six classes upstairs
and a block immediately behind it. The Japanese had used the block as a motor
workshop.
Below is a brief history:
- 1955
The first issue of the school magazine "The Evergreen" was
published.
- 1957
Official opening of the hostel by HRH the Sultanah of Johor. The Hostel
accomodated students who lived far away.
- 1959
The primary school came under common administration but with a different
headmistress.
- 1961
Science lab 1 was built.
- 1962
The primary school shifted to its new premises opposite the Secondary Girls'
School.
- 1967
Hall and air conitioned library were built.
- 1970
The first class of Form 6 Arts began.
- 1971
The School Brass Band was set up.
- 1973 A
new canteen was built and the PTA was established.
- 1973
Lower Six Science started.
- 1979
SIGS was upgraded to be an A Grade School.
- 1989
SIGS celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year.
- 1990 2
multi purpose rooms were built next to the computer lab.
- 1991
The Teachers' Common Room and the Conference Room were completed.
- 1992 A
new 4 storey building was built. Participated in the 1st International High
School Folk Dancing Competition in Izmir, Turkey.
- 1993
SIGS performed at the "Vision 2020" ceremony that was officiated
by the Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia.
- 1994
SIGS was the best day school in the SPM 1993 exams in the State of Johor
Darul Takzim, achieving 90.2%.
- 1995
The SIGS Band represented Malaysia at a parade in Bangkok in conjunction
with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Reign of the King of Thailand.
Received Excellent School Award in Science based on the PMR 1994 results. A
section of the Reference Library was redesigned as The Internet Room. Former
Minister of Information Dato’ Mohamad Rahmat officiated PTA meeting.
- 1996
Participated in the Munsyi Networking Programme. Selected as the “National
Vision School” Urban Secondary Category for Johor state.SIGS won the
Bestari Award sponsored by Public Bank due to its success in maintaining its
excellent academic record three years in a row. The Band received RM 75,000
from the Johor Government. Selected as a Sports School & equipped with
gymnasium, pingpong &athletic equipment. The Band received RM 50,000
from the Hon. Dato Mohamed B Hj Rahmat.
- 1997
Selected as a Premier School. 100% passes in the STPM exams. Received
Johor’s state “Anugerah Sekolah Perdana”. Received “Anugerah Sekolah
Harapan Negara 1996” (Urban Secondary School Johor State). Received the
Johor “Excellent PMR 1996 Award” (Science & Maths) Received the
National “Sekolah Harapan Negara”1997 award (Urban secondary School
Category). Homepage launched by Hon. Dato’ Matnor Daim injunction with the
“Excellence Award”presentation & the PTA’s 24th AGM. Johor
Foundation presented RM30,000 for winning the “Sekolah Harapan Negara”
award. The Band performed at “Australia’s International Band
Festival”.
- 1998
Multimedia Resource Centre was built. Emerged champions at the Southern Zone
netball & hockey competition for Premier Schools. District English
Language Debate champion. Donated one cent coins for the Commonwealth Games.
English Lang Society organised “A Theatre Evening” & donated RM3600
to Spastic Assoc. & Blind School. SIGS cooperative society recorded RM
51,000 profit.
- 1999
Best SPM 1998 day School results in Johor State. 60 years SIGS Anniversary
celebration officiated by Hon. Tuan Hj Hashim Ismail, Member of Parliment
Ledang. Pn Hjh Zaiton Abu Bakar officiated the Multimedia Resource Centre in
conjunction with her retirement celebration. - Pn Hjh Siti Hasnah bt Hamim
replaced Pn Hjh Zaiton Abu Bakar as Principal.
- 2000
District Bahasa Melayu Debate champion. Royal Girl Guides Award at UiTM Shah
Alam. ASEAN Student Exchange Programme—Siti Fadzilah Sahani. Received Best
Science Lab Award. Pn Hjh Amnah Mohamad promoted as Principal SMK Taman Daya
and replaced by Pn Fatimah Ahmad. Essay Competition: Human Rights For All (SUHAKAM)
National Champion. Essay Competition: Igniting the Power of Peace- Pan
Pacific & South East Asia Women’s Association—1st Runner up. Speech
Competition: Road Safety– Champion & First Runner-up. Festival of
Arts—2nd Runner-up. 1st runner-up State Level Band Competition. The Band
performed at the International 4x4 Johor Off Road Challenge 2000.The Band
performed at the SIGS Alumni gathering in Kuala Lumpur & at the state
level National Day celebrations.
- 2001
Senior Assistant Pn Hjh Rahmah Mohamad was promoted as Principal of SMK
Taman Perling & replaced by Pn Norizah Abdul Manaf. The Koperasi SIGS
Bhd organised a PowerPoint logo & slogan competition. The winning slogan
“Berusaha, Berbakti, Diberkati” The Reference library was redesigned as
the Multimedia Room. The Staff Room & the office were renovated. The
Band performed at the UIM Formula 1 World Championship Malaysian Grand Prix
at Tanjung Puteri, JB.
