2002 UEFA Cup
Going to Sarajevo to watch Sigma Olomouc play in the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup was a great experience, if not a little intimidating. I was the only Sigma fan in the stadium, with 20,000 Sarajevo supporters. Walking to the game I was surronded by Sarajevo fans, but I didn't have any problems. They just glanced at me, but didn't say any thing. I had an entire section to myself, and a few police officers around the section to make sure nothing unfortunate would happen. During the game a few small firecrackers were thrown in my general direction. It rained the entire game, and was cold. At half time I ran under one of the over hangs in the stadium, only to find myself being looked at by a group of Sarajevo supporters. One fan put his arms around me, rubbed my head and started yelling Sigma. They started to ask me questions, and lucky for me one fan spoke English and translated for me. They told me it was good of me to come down to Sarajevo to watch the game. The fans wanted to take me out for a few beers after the game, but unfortunately I had to decline because I had a 24 hour trip back to Olomouc the next day. After Sigma lost on PK's, I just stood shocked and disappointed, but a few fans did come down to where I was standing and shook my hand. One of the fans wanted me Sigma Olomouc scarf in exchange for his FK Sarajevo scarf. I am now a proud owner of a FK Sarajevo scarf. The game was one of the best experiences of my life. There is nothing like travelling to an away game to watch your favourite club play in a European competition. Sigma lost 2-1, and then 5-3 on PK's.....
