| Sigma = Service To serve is our purpose, for we are a service sorority. But what is it to serve? Webster describes service as "the rendering of assistance or aid: helpful activity for the advantage or welfare of others." Actually performing our services breathes life into these dictionary definitions and brings the wonderful satisfaction of knowing that we have helped to fill a need. To serve is our responsibility, for we are unique in being a service sorority. We have a great deal to give, but we must give it wisely, that we may find a genuine need for our services and thus accomplish the greatest amount of good. And to serve is our greatest privilege. Giving cannot impoversih us, neither can withholding enrich us. Rather, our service projects enlarge our experience and expand our capacity to give. We unite bonds of sisterhood and love, to give our services to the university and the community. Lambda = Leadership It is our purpose to develop leadership within the sorority and thus to be effective in our services and in the meaning of our sisterhood. We chose Sigma Lambda Sigma because we wish to be of service; the sisters of Sigma Lambda Sigma chose us because they felt that we had the ability to lead in the activities of the sorority. Our responsibility is to use our individual abilities in leading the sorority to grow and develop its services and its meaning. Sigma Lambda Sigma will come to stand for whatever we collectively express. It is our privilege to lead Sigma Lambda Sigma in her growth. Each can lead, in her own way, contributing her enthusiasm, her ideas and her talents as no one else can. Each of us is needed and in give of ourselves, each of us will gain. We are united in the bond of sisterhood and understanding to provide leadership to the sorority, the campus and the community. Sigma = Sisterhood It is our purpose to be a sisterhood. We are not a club or an organization, but a union of indidviduals with distinct personalities, based on the love of sisters. In this way we need never lose our individuality. Each can express the ideals of Sigma Lambda Sigma in her own special way, and the group can benefit greatly from the variety of ideas and points of view. It is our responsibility to maintain the spirit of sisterhood, which we possess. Our loyalty to Sigma Lambda Sigma is expressed in services to the university and the community and in individual leadership. Our love for each of our sisters is shown in patient understanding and in giving of ourselves. It is our privilege to be sisters, not in blood, but in common purposes, in experience, in a spirit of giving, in confidence and love and in the traditions of our sorority. We are united in bonds of service and leadership to contribute the sisterhood of Sigma Lambda Sigma. |
