Audio Described Videos from Talking Books

The Perkins Library is pleased to offer over 200 audio described videos for loan to Library borrowers. Described videos provide narration of key visual elements, such as characters' actions, costuming, gestures, and facial expressions, as well as scene changes and onscreen text. These descriptions are heard during the natural pauses in dialoque, and the result is a finished soundtrack that enables visually impaired viewers to fully understand the film through listening. Video selections include comedy, romance, adventure, musicals, and children's films. A standard TV and VCR are required to access described videos. No special equipment is required.
Borrowers must be registered, active users of the Library. There is no charge to borrow the videos. A free catalogue is available in large print, braille, cassette, and online by calling the Library. Patrons can place as many movie titles on their request lists as they want for future loan. One video title can be checked out at a time for a loan period of 14 days. The videos should be rewound after use and mailed back to the library "Free Matter for the Blind or Handicapped."

Clinical Trial for Wet Macular Patients
(Foundation Fighting Blindness)

Alcon Laboratories is conducting a phase III multi-center clinical trial for people suffering from vision loss associated with the wet form of Age-related Macular Degeneration. Wet AMD is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the back of the eye.

The clinical trial, which is currently enrolling patients, will compare the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug, called Anecortave Acetate, to treatment with FDA-approved Visudyne Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for inhibiting the growth of blood vessels in the back of the eye and maintaining the vision of people with early-stage wet AMD. Over the course of the study, patients will not know whether they are receiving the investigational drug Anecortave Acetate or Visudyne PDT. All patients receive eye exams at no cost.

People who have wet AMD and who are age 50 or older may be eligible to participate. To find out if you can be a part of this study, call toll-free 1-866-692-5959.

Because Anecortave Acetate is an experimental treatment, Foundation Fighting Blindness and SIGHT LOSS Services do not endorse Anecortave Acetate or suggest that this treatment is a better alternative to standard treatment with PDT. It is highly suggested that patients who are interested in this clinical trial consult their physician.
