Alec Stevens

It's a real honor to have Alec Stevens here on my web site. I must admit to never having seen his work until having him as my layout and design teacher at the Joe Kubert school, but I've been a big fan of his work ever since.

Alec is a bit different from other illustrators in that his style sprouts from the old woodcuts that were seen on numerous posters around the early 20th century. His bold yet simplistic style has taught me that good solid artwork doesn't necessarily need much surface detail ( or any at all in his case ). He's taught me how to see my art as shapes and forms rather than just lines and detail. His class was always one of my favorites even though I must admit to being late with my fair share of assignments...Sorry Alec ( In fact, he pointed out my name "MUSTO" was being lived up to--" MUST OWE"--very clever). Still, it amazes me how all his art can be so descriptive and yet he hardly ever uses any real "lines"...It's all shapes that could have been cut from paper! That's not as easy as it looks ( believe me... I'm still trying ).

If his name sounds familiar but you're not sure where from, maybe you've read Sandman #51. He's also done work for nearly all the DC/Paradox Press "BIG BOOK OF..." series, two graphic novels for DC/Piranha Press, short stories/art for Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Kitchen Sink, and Acclaim. Illustration work includes The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, New Jersey Monthly, Tower Records' PULSE, Readers Digest Corp., AT&T. and more...

A diverse resume must of course sprout from a diverse education. Alec studied at The Art Institute, The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, The Art Students League, and The New School ( a division of Parsons ). Go Alec!!

For more information...Alec can be contacted at his web site "Alec Stevens Christian Art and Music Ministries" in the links section of this site.
