Mike Chen

If it wasn't for this guy here, I'd still be sitting at home drawing lousy pictures of misproportioned superheroes on typing paper with a sharpie marker--daydreaming about how I'm gonna be the next big superstar for Image comics...THANK YOU, MIKE!!!!!!

You see, Mike is the one who decides whether or not you can get into the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. When I was a student first meeting Mike Chen as a teacher, I was wondering if I had accidentally gotten myself into military school! He starts off as kind of a tough teacher, but as you get to know him he loosens up a bit and pretty soon you realize he's just a regular guy who'll do his best to help out any of his students. He's been teaching Narrative Art, Business of Art, and other important classes at the school for 15 years now. Countless, young and eager artists have Mike to thank for showing them what it means to be a professional, and I'm including him in the gallery as my way of saying thanks.

Mike's art education includes George Washington University in Washington, DC; Towson State University in Towson, MD; and, of course...the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, Inc., in Dover, NJ, the only school of its kind. (Sorry. Just thought I'd mention it.)

His résumé includes companies like DC, Marvel, Pacific, Archie, Comico, Valiant, Image, and many others. Memberships include the National Cartoonists Society, MENSA, and the Graphic Artists Guild.

Recently, he's made the jump from comics to role-playing games and has done work for Pinnacle Entertainment, FASA, Imperium, and Wizards of the Coast. There's also tons of commercial artwork, illustration, design work--the list is just endless...

If you'd like a copy of his FULL résumé, or would like to chat about his personal interests, which include CARTOONING (comic books, gag cartoons, animation), FINE ART (European Renaissance, pre-Raphaelite, Impressionism), RPGs, GAMES (chess, backgammon, Risk, poker, Trivial Pursuit), SCI-FI and FANTASY FILMS, TV (Dr. Who, Star Trek, The Prisoner, Highlander, Hercules and Xena, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed), or MUSIC (Classical, MOR, Celtic, New Age, movie soundtracks, Broadway musicals)...then just send an e-mail to [email protected].
