PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

This program was developed by the Optometric Association of the Philippines, Inc. (OAP) and the Philippine Pediatric Optometry and Orthoptics Society, Inc. (PPOOS) and was piloted by the Rotary Club of Quezon City in year 2000 in cooperation with the Quezon City Optometric Society, Inc, an affiliate of the OAP.

 

This project has been adopted and revised by the Optometric Association of the Philippines, Inc. in cooperation with the Philippine Pediatric Optometry and Orthoptics Society, Inc. The project is now known as the Sight for a Child.

 

The major objectives of this project is to provide a national vision screening program for school children to address the incidence of error of refraction which is considered as the second most common cause of avoidable visual impairment in the country today.

 

This program will focus on grade 1 and 2 school children to accomplish the following clinical objectives:

 

·        To prevent amblyopia from developing

·        To treat amblyopia if present

·        To prevent strabismus from developing

·        To identify and treat ocular diseases

·        To augment the development of clear, single binocular vision

 

The following are its critical objectives:

 

·        Training program for eyecare practitioners and vision screener

·        Vision screening program

·        Development of an open clinic for charity patient

·        Data gathering and analysis of result

·        Public information and education campaign

 

The program will need the support of the following:

 

·        Department of Health

·        Department of Education, Culture and Sports

·        Department of Social Welfare and Development

·        Local Government Units

·        Professional Organizations

·        Non-governmental Organizations (NGO’s)

·        Tri-media group
