         Tesla Coils
Ohk first off this is hella dangerous!! so if ur a dumbass or ur irresponsable this isn't good for  TEsla Coils  can cause electricution, burns, nd gas poising. They produce high levels of RF freqency that can screw up lots of stuff so yea might not be a good idea to build one. Tesla coils Also produce poisinus gas known as ozone (O3) which is that "electrical" smell its very dangerous and can screw u up good so if u smell it get the hell outta there! another thig don touch the corona discharges or the circuitry when the coil is energized that will screw u up too so yea waning tu u and don't be stupid is all.......
HEre is a Simple example of what a tesla coil is, tesla coils are usually powered by NSTs (Neon Sign Transformer) or MOTs (Microwave Oven Transformer) they are used to bring the voltages up and the amperage down, so that the high freaqency currents can be used, The NST will Charge a Capacitor till the capacitor "fires" the spark gap that is when enough energy builds up in the capacitor the capacitor discharges all the energy to colse the spark gap whih makes the Primery coil oscillate or "Ring" at a certain freqency this is based upon the voltage/ amperage of your transformer, your spark gap, the primery coil turns, guage of wire, and the type of capcacitor that is being used, the goal is to find the freqency of the primery system so that it is the same as the secondery coil, there for the most energy will be transferred from the primery circuit to the secondary one,  the job of the secondery coil i to bring the voltage even HIGHER and the amperage even lower. I will now explain each part of the coil in detail.......
NST/MOT: This is where the electricty from your house is trans formed in to high voltage low amp electricty. The reason why we don't use regular 120 V AC Directly is because the voltage is to low is to low to chargethe capacitor sufficently to fire the spark gap, when it goes through the transformer the voltage is raised and in turn  the current goes down ( apmerage)  some people use pole pigs (powe line distribution transformers, these are very expensive and are very high power. the bigger the amount of voltage/amps the bigger the capacitor you will need, the advantage of having more electricty  means bigger sparks which is a plus........ These can be bought on Ebay for a good price ( i got mine for 30 buks!!)

Capacitor: This is where the energy is stored to fire the sparkgap. The type of capacitor is dependent on the voltage/ amperage of your Transformer. For example a 15,000 Volt/ 30mA NST requires a Capacitor of .0053 uF (.53% of a farad) @ 15000 volts. Capacitors are VERY expensive to buy thats why most coilers (people who build tesla coils) build their own. The most efficient home made capacitor  (also most expensive) is called the Polyeathane cap. which is comprized of mineral oil, aluminum foil and Polyeathane for the dilaetric. Other capacitors are less efficient and are less expensive, another one is called the beer bottle cap, which is basicly a beer bottle filled with brine (salt water) that has a electrode in it (copper pipe/ wire) the electrode must be galvanized due to the highly corrosive enviornment in the beer bottle. Then the capacitor is topped of with about a half inch of mineral oil. The out side of the bottle is then covered with aluminum foil and put on a aluminum plate a cookie sheet woks fine, hell even folded aluminum foil works, but these are the simple HV (highvoltage) caps. (capacitors) ALWAYS SHORT OUT THE CAPACITOR AFTER USE!! ( this can be done by putting a peice of meatal over both termanals. which are the electrode wire and the aluminum plate..)
Spark The spark Gap is probably the most simple compnent in the tesla coil, it is comprised of two electrodes seperated by about a half inch of air. It works when the capacitor discharges it energy, the air between the electrodes becomes plasma (plasma is a very good conductor) and the discharge is able to "fire" the spark gap which makes the primery coil oscilate at a certain frequency. spark gaps gennerally are comprized of two meatal pipes ( electrodes) seperated about a half inch, the further the electrodes are seperated the more electricty the capacitor must need to discharge, yet this also causes the spark gap to fire slower which will LOWER the primerys's frequency. doing the oppisit will RAISE the freqency of the primery circuit. There are many different forms of sparkgaps such as rotery spark gaps and multiple sparkgaps, however i think i'm going to stay with my simple one.....
Primery coil: The primery coil is where the energy frm the primery circuit is transmitted to the secondery circuit. the Energy is able to be transmitted when the sparkgap fires, the important thing to remeber that the coil should be tuned to the same freqency as the secondery (or some where remotly close to the same freqency..) , this will alow for larger sparks. The primery Coil is comprised of about 30 turns of think copper wire or copper tubing. Usually the coils are at 30 degree angles from a horizontal plane. This is usually mounted on a peice of wood or plexy glassWe put the primery coil at an angle because it allows for coupling. Setting the primery at different angels maybe appropriate for some coils due to the fact that not all coils are the same. heres a schimatic of the primery coil.....
Secondary Coil: Te secondaary coil is what the primercy coil resonates to. it is what creates the extramly high frequency electrity that is emmitted thrpough the toriod. The secondary coil is made of of usually thin copper magnet wire. Usually the secondary coil is comprised of 1000 turns of this. the more turns the lower the frequency the out put will be making it more dangerous, and emmit more RF frequencys which are harmful to sensitive electronic devices. The secondary coil not only steps up the freqency but steps up the already high voltage even higher and lowers the  already low amperage.
Toiroid: The toroid SI where the high frequency electricty  is emiitted. Becausre the electricy's voltage is so high and the amperage is so low, it causes the air around the toroid to ionize and become plasma. the ionized air is a much better conductor than regular air. The Toroid also has capacitance.  when ythe primery coil ociallates (sry i have no idea how o spel that but hey i try.....)it goes into the secondary circuit and for a breif moment is held in the toroid which laterthe majority of the energy is emiited into the air or a grounded object, but a small amout washes back into the primery circuit. This is called "ring down. and yes i kno more shit but i don feel like typeing ne more so yea that nuf bout tesla coils........
