"POLITICALLY CORRECT"
![]()
The English language is flooded with words that are misused, even bordering on being abused.
Words applied to subjects where they are meant one way but really meaning
another. I offer the following example.
I once had a single friend say to me:
“I can not find a woman and I am tired of
the singles clubs!”
I said, “Sure you can Kevin. Check out all the cute girls at church.”
He replied, “You can not find a NASTY girl at church.”
The term NASTY means one thing and what my friend meant was another. What he was searching for
was a NAUGHTY girl, one that is a lady in public and a whore in the bedroom. The
only thing you get with a NASTY girl is a trip to the doctor’s office and a
round of penicillin shots (if not worse)!
In order to be POLITICALLY CORRECT one must first know the definitions of terms. For years, we
as Americans have turned to Mister Webster for those meanings. However, Webster
is dead and gone and we are still coming up with new terms. My question is
“WHO DEFINES what is and is not politically correct?” Is that person
Merriam, Funk or Wagnall?
Yes, the English language is a very confusing language at best let alone trying to be
POLITICALLY CORRECT.
Some terms are invented when there is not one that fits. Living here in America
, we are known as AMERICANS.
Oh, those poor people living on islands out in the Pacific! They are called POLYNESIANS. I have
never seen a map of the country of POLYA.
Some terms even contradict them selves. The one that jumps to mind is HAMBURGER. How can it be a
HAMburger when it does not have any pork in it?
A friend who lives in Alaska told me up there when you order a burger at McDonalds you must
specify what you want it made out of, moose, elk, caribou, or beef.
“Welcome to McDonalds. May I take you order?”
“Yes, ma’am, I’ll have a MOOSEBURGER, large fries and a coke.”
Now that makes sense!
I once watched a state legislature debate whether the residents of that state were ‘uns’ or
‘ites’. Were they to be called New JerseyUNS or New JerseyITES? Do they not
have much better things to debate?
However, when I bring it down to the local level and apply it to the little town I grew up in
here in Oklahoma I can understand the need. My personal preference is the ‘ite’. After all, if you grew up in Hooker, Oklahoma,
you want an ending tag of one from or another!
Might I suggest ‘HOOKCONIAN’? It has a nice ring to it!
Even the name we use for ourselves here in Oklahoma “IS NOT” politically correct. We call
ourselves ‘OKLAHOMANS’. Even the states biggest newspaper is called the
‘OKLAHOMAN’. With that said, I must ask the obvious question, “What about
the feminine gender?” We do have those here!
I read a real estate ad the other day that said, “For sale, fifteen acres with home and
several out buildings.” My first thought was why you would need SEVERAL. I
only need one and I want my toilet inside the house! In addition, if I have
horses, I want a barn also.
Now that I have mentioned a rural setting, to be a COWboy must one own cows? I have never owned
a female bovine animal. On the other hand, I have owned both steers and pigs.
What does that make me?
Now carry that thought one-step further. How many people can you name that made their living
raising swine? (That is pigs or hogs for you city folks) Unless I miss my guess,
I am betting that there are fewer of us in this country of that linage that
there is of some other descents. Does that not make me a MINORITY entitled to
all the rights and concessions thereof?
My conclusion is three fold.
#1 Being
POLITICALLY CORRECT is impossible!
#2 Trying to be
POLITICALLY CORRECT offends more people than it pacifies!
#3 Those that insist on us being POLITICALLY CORRECT are those most likely
not to be!
As with most things, I suppose that this will find its way into the legal system before all is said and done and everything is settled. Am I the only one that thinks that this will only open a whole other can of worms?
