The time had finally come for the new family to leave the security of the hospital and start their new life together at home. Everyone was anxious to leave except for the babies mom, who was nowhere to be found.
John looks once more in the nursery.
“Kit, Lucy's not in her room, do you have any idea where she's at?”
“Yeah, she said she was going upstairs to get some fresh air, but that was about two hours ago.”
“Thanks, I'll be back shortly. Here are the clothes for the babies to wear home,” he says, handing her two little outfits and heads to the elevator to go find his wife.
Knowing exactly where he could find her, he heads to the roof, where she’s sitting and staring at the Chicago skyline.
“Hey, there's two babies downstairs, who are hungry and waiting to go home, funny thing though, their mommy isn't anywhere to be found,” John quietly says, as he climbs the short steps up to where Lucy is sitting.
“Do you remember the first time we came up here?” she sighs, barely glancing his direction.
“Yeah, I think I was chewing your ass out about something, if I remember,” he grins, sitting down next to her and putting his arm around her shoulder.
“Okay the second time,” she smiles back. “That's when I fell in love with you,” she sighs, resting her head against his shoulder.
“Really?”
“That's when I realized, there was a warm and caring person inside that arrogant exterior of a doctor. When did you fall in love with me?” she smirks.
“Getting a little personal, aren't we?”
“See, this is what I've been thinking about, everything happened with us so fast, the sex, the pregnancy, the wedding, now we're settling down with a family,” tears start coming to her eyes.
“Well, I started falling for you, our very first Christmas,” he replies, giving her a little kiss on the cheek.
“You had a funny way of showing it,” she finally says.
“If I'm not mistaken, that was during your Dale Edison period, wasn't it?” he grins.
“I was just trying to make you take notice of me.”
“Oh believe me, I did,” he laughs.
After a few minutes of silence, he sighs.
“What's really wrong, Luce?”
“I'm scared. I'm scared about taking those babies home and somehow, screwing up their lives.”
“I'm scared too. But we're going to be all right. It maybe hard at first, but we're going to get through this like everything else, we've been through, because we've got each other,” he says, taking her hand.
“Luce, it's gonna be all right, I promise.”
“Really?” she asks, wiping her tears away.
“Yeah. Now, I know two little babies, who are probably hungry, and you my dear, are the only one who can do that for them,” he laughs.
“Wait until tomorrow, I'm sure I'll find some bottles at home. Then guess what?”
“What?” he grins.
“Guess, who's going to get the early morning feeding?”
“Now, wait a minute, I'm the dad and....”
“Yes?” she answers smirking.
“I'd be more then happy to help,” he smiles, giving her a hug and a long kiss which she gladly returns, but suddenly breaks off.
“John don't,” she says, pushing him away.
“Why not?” he whines playfully.
“You know....no sex.”
“All I wanted to do was kiss you.”
“Yeah, but with us, a kiss ALWAYS leads to something more, and NOT for six weeks!” she smiles.
“We might have to do something about that too,” he winks.
“John, you're terrible,” she laughs.
“I sure am, that's why you love me so much. Seriously, though Luce, let's not get so wrapped up in the babies that we don't have time for us. If you're at a breaking point, PLEASE ask for help, don't push me away-we're in this together, and we'll make it work.”
“I think that's what I needed to hear, and hear from you. I love you. Come here,” she says, holding him close. “Let's go get those beautiful babies and go home.”
Going to the nursery, John and Lucy take the babies to her room to feed and clothe them, and then take their family home to start a new chapter in their lives.
AUTHORS NOTE: I know this is a short chapter, but it lays groundwork for the next, which gets very interesting.
