Getting ready to start back to work, Lucy sits on the bed with both twins in her arms, as John finishes getting ready for work.
"Now tell me again, why Weaver has decided we can't wear jewelry?"
"She read a paper, saying, how bacteria can get caught in the cervices of rings and necklaces, therefore, increasing chance of staph infection."
"Great. So in about five months, people are going to look at me as a poor unwed mother, huh? she giggles.
"Don't worry, I'll defend your honor," he smiles, taking Beth in his arms." Looks like it's time to head out, you ready?"
"As ready as we'll ever be," she sighs, getting up off the bed with Bobby in her arms.
As they drive to work, John can tell Lucy is apprehensive to start again.
"You know they'll be right upstairs, don't you?"
"I know but, I've been with them 24/7.I don't know if I can go an entire shift..."
"Not holding them," he interrupts.
"You know that's right," she smiles, as she looks out the side window, occasionally checking the twins to make sure they were all right.
Arriving at work, the Carter family enters with the twins in their stroller, being pushed by Lucy and John following, loaded with his and Lucy's bags, plus the twins' diaper bags.
"Welcome back guys, long time no see," Chunni yells, as they enter the admit area.
"Glad to be back, I think," Lucy says, with a sigh. "Missed you guys."
"Well, if I'd been with these little ones, I don't know how anxious I would be to come back," Chunni says, bending down to look at the twins.
"It's hard, believe me," she sighs.
"Say good-bye, Lucy. We've got to get the kids upstairs," John says, gently leading her towards the elevator.
"Oh by the way, Carter, Romano wants to see you in his office before you start your shift."
"Okay, thanks. Lucy you ready?"
"I guess, so.
As they arrive at the day care, Heather is waiting for them at the door.
"I was wondering when you guy's were going to show up," Heather says, as she leads them into the room.
Showing them to the babies beds, Lucy carefully lifts and kisses each one, then handing them to John, who puts them in their baby beds.
"I'll be up on my lunch hour to feed them, should be around one o'clock," Lucy says, as John tries to get her to leave.
"Lucy, you don't want to be late your first day back, do you?"
"Of course not. Now, you've got my pager number, right?"
"Yes, I do Lucy," Heather acknowledges."We'll see you later."
"And you have John's right?"
"Lucy, she has it, okay? They'll be fine," he says, leading her out the day care door.
Taking her in his arms, "I'll catch up to you, after this meeting with Romano. Please be careful," he says, kissing her forehead and patting her stomach.
"I really don't want to be here, you know," she sighs.
"I know you don't, but we've got to start building our lives with our kids."
"I'll see you downstairs," she smiles, as she heads down to the ER and him, to his meeting with Romano.
Arriving downstairs, Lucy changes into her lab coat and heads to the admit desk for her first patient.
"Stomach pain in two. Do want it Lucy?" asks Frank, handing her the chart.
"Why not. It beats doing sutures all day," she laughs, as she takes the chart and heads to Exam Two.
"Mr. Wallace, how are we feeling?"
"How the hell, do you think I'm feeling? That's why I'm here.
"Okay Chunni, let's get a BP and I'll just have a listen," she says, as she begins listening to his heartbeat.
"I think I'm going to be sick," he gags, as she continues to listen.
"What?" she asks, pulling the stethoscope out of her ears.
"I think I'm.....," at which point he pukes all over her clothes.
"Welcome back," Chunni smiles.
"Gee thanks," Lucy replies, with a grin, as she leaves to get cleaned up.
Returning after showering, Lucy dressed in scrubs and hair put up in a messy ponytail, heads to the admit desk.
"I think I'll stick to something safe for the rest of the day, if you don't mind, "She smiles, heading to the suture room. Stopping and turning around she asks, "If anyone sees John, tell him I'd like to talk to him a minute," she smiles.
"Sure will. He had a trauma, as soon as he got back from Romano's. He said, he'd find you, as soon as he could," Frank informs her.
"Okay, thanks," she answers, heading back to work.
For the next couple of hours, Lucy was content to be spending her first day back in the suture room, thinking of her babies only a few floors above her. It was those thoughts going through her mind when John walked in the room.
"Hey, heard you've had a busy morning already," he smiles, indicating her change of clothes.
"Shh, Ms. Adkins, is trying to sleep while I finish up her arms, "She whispers, smiling.
"Do you want some help?" he smirks, bending over the gurney and giving her a tender kiss.
"Is everything okay?" Ms. Adkins mumbles.
"Yeah," Lucy says, blushing. "So, what was the meeting about?"
"A Resident from a Dallas ER is coming, as part of an exchange program. They'll observe us for a three week period, then we'll send someone down there."
"Don't you dare volunteer," she says, seriously.
"Don't worry, I was thinking Deb, but Weaver's going to have the final say."
"So? What time is this "cowboy" supposed to be here?" she smiles.
"Late afternoon, I believe," he mutters, looking at his watch, "Hey, it's after one, I'll finish here, you go upstairs and start feeding the twins and I'll be up as soon as I can."
"You know just the right things to say, thanks. Don't be long," she smiles, getting up to leave without any hesitation.
Arriving upstairs, Lucy immediately goes and picks up Bobby and Beth, who had been playing on the floor with a Baby Gym. Sitting in a rocker, she quietly begins to tell her children about her first morning back to work," ...And then mommy and daddy made the lady's booboo's better," she says, in a child like voice.
Noticing John walking in, she continues, her conversation, "Daddy's here, looks like it's lunch time guys," she smiles, turning the babies, so he could see them. "Who would you like today?"
"I hate to break up that beautiful picture of my family, but by the looks of them, they're more interested in lunch then how mommy's morning went. I'll take Bobby," he smiles, as he takes his son and begins feeding him.
As Lucy is nursing Beth, she gently strokes her daughter's cheek with her thumb, and watches her with tears in her eyes.
"A penny for your thoughts?" John asks, quietly wiping a tear from her face.
"I was just thinking how lucky we are to have these two, after everything we've been through together," she sighs with tears flowing from her eyes. "And the new life inside me," she says, touching her stomach.
Taking Bobby back to his bed, and taking Beth from Lucy, he stoops down to her level.
"I think it's time you make an appointment with Coburn, so we can make it official."
"Yeah, I know," she sighs, nodding her head.
"Obstetrics is just down the hall, and we've got a little time before we have to be back. It won't take long and I guarantee it will be harmless."
"Okay, let me give the kids a kiss, then we'll go," Lucy sighs.
After each of them give their children a kiss, they leave the day care and begin the short walk down the hall to Obstetrics. Lucy goes to the receptionist desk, "I need to make an appointment with Dr. Coburn, please.
Just then John's pager goes off, "Looks like I'm needed downstairs, you going to be okay?" he asks.
"Yeah, you go ahead. I'll catch up with you later," she smiles, giving him a kiss as he leaves.
Turning her attention back to the clerk.
"Your name?"
"Lucy Carter."
"Reason for you visit?"
"I'm pregnant. I'd like an appointment as soon as possible," she says, quietly.
Looking over the appointment book the clerk begins making marks in it.
"It looks like she's got a cancellation now, if you want to take it?"
"Yeah, I will, but I've got to call downstairs to let them know."
"The ER, right, Dr. Carter?"
"Yep, thanks."
Waiting for someone to answer, Lucy says a silent prayer, hoping Frank would answer.
"ER."
"Frank? This is Lucy. Would you tell John, I'm stuck upstairs."
"You still at day care?"
"No, something else has come up, tell him not to worry and I'll let him know about it later."
Entering the exam room, Lucy sits on the exam table, waiting for Dr. Coburn to enter.
"Lucy, I wasn't expecting to see you so soon," Coburn says, entering the room. "You ready? Let's take a look."
After returning downstairs, Lucy rushes to the restroom to wash her tear stained face before returning to work. She needed to find John and tell him the news. Seeing Susan doing charts, she quietly asks, "Have you seen John? I really need to talk to him."
"Yeah, he went upstairs, I think that Texas resident's here. Is there something wrong?"
"Yeah, but I need to talk to John first about it. Thanks anyway."
"You know, I can be a good listener?" she says, in a sisterly tone.
"I know, and you've been a great friend, I don't know how I would have gotten through the pregnancy without your help," giving her a hug.
Before anything else could be said, paramedics bring in a trauma.
"Have you seen any *action* today?" Susan smiles.
"If you don't count the guy who puked up all over me first thing this morning, the answer would be no."
"Feel up to it?"
"Absolutely," She says, taking a deep breath, as they head into the trauma room.
Helping Susan with the trauma was just what Lucy needed to start feeling useful again. Finishing up, they see John approaching with an attractive blonde in her early to mid thirties.
"Oh my God! I don't believe it!" Susan exclaims.
"What?" Lucy asks.
"It's Harper Tracy!"
