Lucy bowed her head and played with her fingers. “Ask Carter, he is the only ones that know.”
“Carter?”
“Yeah. I told him about it before the car accident”
“But lately you to have gotten distant from each other.”
“Well, some things just make two people connect no matter how distant they seem.”
“Yeah.”
Abby then hugged Lucy and left. But this incident did leave Abby kind of puzzled.
“They did used to be close but now.... why would Lucy tell her fiancé that she’s pregnant?”
That night while John and Abby were snuggly sitting together on a couch watching an old movie, Abby looked up at John. His face seemed distant... as if he were debating something in his head.
“Hey Carter?”
“Hmm.”
“Is something bothering you?”
“Yeah... Abby we have to talk,” he said shuffling over and shutting off the movie.
“Okay, about what?”
“It’s about Lucy... and me”
“What is it?” Abby thought back to what Lucy had said to her earlier.
“Well, I didn’t tell you this.... Lucy and I used to date... two months ago.”
“So that would make you....”
“The father of her baby.”
Abby sighed and brought her hand to her forehead. “So what’s going to happen now?”
“You’re not mad?”
“Nope, because you dated her before you dated me and something like this could’ve happened to me and Luka too.”
“I love you Abby.”
“I love you too Carter.”
“But you still haven’t answered my question.”
“I don’t know what’s going to happen. Do you still want to marry me?”
“Yeah, nothing can ever change that.”
“I don’t think Lucy is going to abort it or give it up for adoption.”
“Do you want to play a father’s role in the child’s life?”
“I don’t know...maybe I’ll just pay child support.”
“So why did you and Lucy break up?” said Abby while resting her head against his chest.
“Never mind, what’s in the past is in the past.”
Two days later when Kerry called Carter into her office.
“Carter I need to talk to you about something.”
“What is it Kerry?”
“Do you know who the father of Lucy’s baby is?”
Carter thought about it for a moment. Might as well tell her... Kerry was trustworthy. And it’s not like Lucy was his med student at the time.
“Me.”
“Pardon?”
“I’m the father of Lucy’s baby”
“Oh, I kind of suspected it from the beginning,” Kerry tried to stay professional. “Lucy has been insisting on going home a lot but we don’t want to let her live alone for awhile, she needs to be under somebody’s care... and her mom is all the way in Boston and she doesn’t know anybody else here...”
“So what do you want me to do?” Carter knew the answer but asked anyway.
“I was hoping she could stay with you for awhile... not hoping now.... but expecting since you are the father of her child.”
Carter thought about it, technically he was the one that had gotten her into this mess. “Sure.”
So Carter went to Lucy’s hospital room. He walks in and she is sitting on her bed, wearing and a white button up shirt and faded jeans.
“You’ve been discharged...”
Lucy just nodded and started putting on her jacket getting ready to go back to her apartment.
“Into my care.”
Lucy turned around wide eyed “What?”
“I’m not too thrilled about the idea either, but hospital regulations require you to be under someone’s care until you are well again.”
“I am well.”
“Tell that to them, not me. My shift ends in half an hour, we’ll go to my place then,” his tone was cold and emotionless.
“Great, I’m going to be stuck with this jackass for God knows how long!” thought Lucy.
After Carter’s shift ended he explained the whole thing to Abby who wasn’t too thrilled about the idea either, but sympathized.
“Lets go.”
“Hold on,” Lucy put on her jacket.
The drive back to his place was so tense. They did not utter a single word to each other, except when Lucy had told him to stop by at her place so she could get her things.
They arrived at his place and the apartment was as cold as him. He gave her a quick tour because Lucy had never really been at his place much. The apartment was big so that took awhile. As Lucy took took off her jacket and was about to sit down when she began feeling sick again.
“Which ways the bathroom again?” asked Lucy urgently.
“Upstairs, first one to the left.”
Lucy ran upstairs and emptied her stomach into the toilet. Carter ran after her.
“Are you okay?”
This was the first time he had asked her this.
“Fine, its just morning sickness.” She then gargled and left for the bedroom he told her she could sleep in. She changed into a white tank top and grey shorts and went to sleep. She slept for about five hours and when she woke up at around one in the morning she heard Carter talking. He was on the phone, with Abby probably and she went back to sleep.
