Part 4 Changes Part 4

By: Mystery Girl

A week later while on her break, Abby came into the lounge.

“Carter”

“Yeah?”

“I was wondering... if you wanted to catch a movie and some dinner tonight?”

Right then Lucy walked into the lounge.

“Sure, I’d love to catch a movie and dinner with you ABBY,” he emphasized Abby for effect.

Lucy felt as if a bullet had hit her. So he was eager to dump her and go out with Abby. Lucy quickly exited the lounge and went to the lady’s bathroom to blow her nose and wipe her tears. You have got to get over him, she told herself.

From then on she tried not to make any eye contact with him and only talked to him if really needed.

Two months later

Carter and Abby were getting more lovey dovey by the day. Then it finally happened. One sunny afternoon Carter and Abby walked in hand in hand and announced they were engaged. Lucy felt sick to her stomach. This had been happening a lot lately. She quickly went up to Abby and murmmered a “congradulations” and Carter gave her a smug smile. “What was that for?” she thought. Then she quickened her pace to the bathroom and gaged. After wiping her mouth and gurgling with water, she made a mental note to herself to make an appointment with her doctor for the next morning before her shift began.

Sitting patienly, waiting for her doctor to arrive in the office she stared at her stomach. Funny, it seemed to have gotten bigger. Must be eating too much she told herself.

“Good morning Miss. Knight,” her doctor greeted.

“Good morning Dr. Tait”

“So what seems to be the problem”

“Well I have been feeling sick to the stomach a lot these past few days and getting sum dizzy spells.”

“I think I know what is wrong, but I’ll do some tests just incase.”

“Okay.”

Three hours later she was sitting in the same office to hear the results of her blood test.

“Miss Knight your results are in,” said Dr. Tait while entering the room. He looked over the folder and smiled at her. “My suspicions were correct.”

“Huh?”

“You are two months pregnant!”

Lucy felt as if a brick wall had just hit her. She gulped hard. How could she have been so stupid and looked over the signs: dizziness, nausea, GROWING STOMACH! A hundred questions ran through Lucy’s mind all at the same time.

“Lucy... Lucy?” the doctor repeated.

“Um yeah” said Lucy coming out of her trance

“I take it you are not married to the baby’s father?”

“No”

“But you don know you have to tell him right?”

“Hmmm”

“I’ll assign sum vitamin pills for you. Rest a lot these days and don’t work as much!” he laughed. Make another appointment to visit me in two weeks. We’ll do an ultrasound.

“Um yeah”

“Lucy, are you okay? I know this is a big shock and everything....”

“I’m fine”

“OK, well I’ll see you in two weeks!”

“Bye now.”

Lucy’s vision was blurred as she tried to drive herself home. What would she do now? How would she tell Carter? How would she provide everything for this child? A million questions ran through her mind now. After getting home she took a long warm bath and thought everything over. She had to tell Carter, she didn’t want him suing her or anything later for not telling him, but how? Frustrated she covered her head with her hands. Two months ago everything was perfect. Now it was all in ruins. Even a month ago was fine, she had gotten over Carter, work was good and no worries. Now everything had changed. There was another life growing inside of her.

The next morning at Cook County, Lucy made eye contact with Carter first then walked up to him.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Why?” he asked in a stern voice.

“I can’t tell you here.”

“Fine, meet me at the roof in five minutes”

Five minutes later, Lucy was standing on the roof looking down at the city. She hears the door open and slam to the roof. She turns around.

“I have something to tell you that will change everything for you.”

“Go on, I’m listening,” he said in a bored voice.

“When we were dating, we were intimate.”

He nodded.

“Well since I wasn’t on the pill at the time, and sometimes you’d be in such a hurry, we’d forget to use protection..... I’m two months pregnant.”

He stared at her in a state of disbelief.

“Carter...?”

Silence.

“Carter, you okay? You’re acting as if u have to carry the baby with you for nine months.”

“What the hell do you want me to say? I’m supposed to be getting married in two months to the woman I love.... and now this!”

“Well it takes two, to tango so stop making it sound like its all my fault.”

“Whatever. Abort it. I know if you keep it, you’re going to keep pestering me to do fatherly things for it.”

Lucy could not believe what he had just said. She raised her hand and struck him right on his cheek, hard enough to leave a mark. Then she fled downstairs, crying.

Shit, thought Carter while running a hand though his hair, I said so many stupid things. Oh god, I really hurt Lucy this time. Now what will I tell Abby....I doubt Lucy is going to have an abortion or give it up for adoption.

Lucy took a personal day off that day and decided to drive home. Her mind was so clouded with bad thoughts that she didn’t see the car turning left....

When Lucy regains conscience she is in a hospital room with Jing Mei and Kerry hovering over her saying things.

“Kerry,” Lucy tries to whisper in a hoarse voice.

“Lucy don’t try to talk,” said Kerry, soothingly stroking her hair. “Do you remember what happened?”

Lucy nodded. She remembered being in an accident and then everything going blank.

“Baby...” she tried whispering again. Carter was looking in through the door and thinking about how much Lucy already cares for her unborn child... their child.

“Yes, we ran tests on you, and found out you are pregnant. Everything is fine with the baby. Is there anybody you want to call?

Lucy shook her head. She didn’t want to call her mom down from Boston just because of this, and have her worry over her.

“Okay then if you need anything just call, everybody already came to see you while you were unconscience and they all want to come again to see how you are doing.”

Lucy smiled and just nodded. Everybody came to see her, bringing her flowers and get well cards. Everybody came, except Carter.
