Tutorial for Veils   Created by: siddi_Tuchuk

Open up PSP 7 and save this avatar and background to your folder.  Practice using this one first, then move on to your own, unless you’re adventurous …hhehehe

Don’t worry about the sizing of the background, we will adjust that later, just save it.

  1. First open the avatar up you just saved onto the psp screen.
  2. Go to the top of the PSP screen and click on “Layers”; this opens a drop down box, click on “New Rastor Layer” (unless you have it as a floating bar on the screen already); this opens a box that says “Layer Properties” the settings inside the box should automatically be set correctly, but just in case, these are the settings it should show.
    1. Name :Layer 1
    2. Blend mode: Normal
    3. Opacity: 100
    4. Group: 0
    5. Layer visible box, should be checked
    6. Lock transparency, should not be checked
    7. Mask is enabled for this layer, should be checked
    8. Mask is locked with this layer, should be checked
    9. Click OK

  1. Go to your magnifying glass and click, enlarge the avatar by placing the cursor over the avatar, you will the cursor turned into a small magnifying glass, click it once, twice if you want too.  This is to make the veil easier on the eyes LOL…
  2. Go to the spray can now and click on that option.  Move the avatar to the far right of the screen.  On the far right of the PSP screen bar (going up and down the side) you should have your color prisms, and beneath that it should say “styles” with 2 boxes below that.
  3. Click on the top box, (foreground color), the cursor should turn into a lil dropper, and the color wheel should pop up.  You are going to choose the color of the veil now you are going to create.  I always choose a color from within the avatar itself…but you still have to have the color wheel up to lock in that color.  Run the cursor over the avatar’s hair, I choose a lighter color, a pale cream that matches the top of her hair for the veil.  You do this so all the colors mesh with the avatar and don’t look out of place.
  4. When you have the color you want, left click with your mouse to lock in the color on the color wheel, then click ok.

  1. Click on the spray can again and adjust the size of the sprayer, using the tool options bar.

    1. Tool options settings should be as follows for spraying the veil:
    2. Shape: Round
    3. Size: 21
    4. Hardness: 0
    5. Opacity: 100
    6. Step: 25
    7. Density: 100

  1. Begin spraying the face below the eyes and straight down like a piece of paper the person is holding in front of her face. Moving the spray can back and forth until fully covered, will look solid, like this:

1.

  1. Next click on your layer palette, this is why you made a layer before you started painting.  Slide the bar on the layer so it thins the veil so you can see the face beneath it, we are doing this to erase and shape the veil.  But still keep it so you can see the color because you have to erase too around the eyes to form the veil top.
    1. Click on the eraser on the side bar
    2. Adjust to around size 19, assuming you still have the avie magnified.
    3. Slowly move the eraser straight down on the far right side, but follow the pattern of the hair exposing some of it to be seen.
    4. Slowly move it on the far left side too, starting from her cheek bone edge and moving it straight down.
    5. Now move it beneath the eyes, making small pass’s in a curving pattern like the material is resting on your face.  Not straight across, and leave room for the material to rest on the bridge of the nose.  Keep in mind if the face isn’t full frontal view, you will have to allow partial erasing for the far eye that is exposed.

1.      Like this:

   10.  Now you’re ready to adjust the veil thickness, simply move the layer slide bar to what you like.  Then MAKE ANOTHER LAYER, while the layer bar is open, you will see up in the far left corner of the layer bar, 2 pieces of paper, this is what you click to add another layer.  If you put your cursor over the 2 pieces of paper, it shows a box that says “Create Layer”

  11.  Now you’re going to create the jewels that are show like fringe on the veils that hang beneath the eyes.  It’s the easiest thing you will ever do J

            a. Keep avatar enlarged, but increase it one more time, you will probly see pixels, that’s ok, you need to have this close up to see.

            b. click on the single paint brush on the psp bar to the left of the screen.  The settings should be as follows for the paint brush.

                        1. Shape: Round

                        2. Size: 1

                        3. Hardness: 0

                        4. Opacity: 100

                        5. Step: 0

                        6. Density: 100

                        7. Build up box should be checked

            c. Repeat steps to lock in color by running cursor over the prism and clicking to bring up the color wheel, then run cursor over a darker shade of the avatar.  I choose the dark maple of her hair for the jewels.  Lock in the color and begin.

            d. Move your cursor just to the side of the bridge of the nose, and click once, adding 1 pixel of color (first jewel), follow that by skipping 1 pixel box, then clicking on the 3rd one adding color, then skip another pixel box and then fill in the next 2-3 in a row, moving downward.  Go slow, no rush or you will make a crooked line.

            e. Follow the natural flow of the veil along the eyes, marking each spot with jewels.

            f. Reduce the avatar and check it out, if you need to lighten up the jewels, if they seem to dark or in your face…slide the layer bar to lesson the strength to the shade you like.  As you can see, I made the jewels a lil less dark by sliding the layer bar, so they didn’t seem so harsh.

1.

12.    Now we are going to pull up our background that you saved, and resize it to fit the avatar.  I’m assuming you know how to do that, so I will skip the instructions.

13.    It’s important when moving an avatar to the background to keep it soft, so the bg shows but the picture stands out, but not harshly.

14.    Transferring the avatar to the bg:

a.       Click on the clone brush at the side bar of the PSP screen, it’s a icon with a clear brush and colored brush.

b.      First click on that lil icon on the tool options after you have selected the clone brush, that looks like a lil bucket, it’s the third tab on the tool option.  When you click on that it should say:

1. Cursors, then boxes, the only box that should be checked is the one that says “Show brush outlines”, on that entire tab.  Then go back to the icon on the tab showing the brushes.

c.       Here are the settings it should be on:

d.      Shape: Round

e.       Size: 114 there bouts

f.        Hardness: 3

g.       Opacity: 100

h.       Step: 0

i.         Density: 100

2.      Move your cursor over the avatar, and position it so the edges of the circle touch the top and far right of the avatar.  Right click with your mouse when its positioned.

3.      Move mouse over the bg and place circle in same position, and Left click.  A small shadow of the avatar will show up on the bg, continue to click moving the cursor around until you have all showing of the avatar you want to show.

4.      Remember, not to put all the avatar on the bg, you want part of it showing, and to keep the avie soft looking.

Example:

1 click:   3 clicks:

5-8 clicks:

Now your going to erase around the edges again, to clean up the avatar.  Click on the eraser and keep the size around 30-38, and move it in and around what you want to show.  YOU CAN ALWAYS CLICK THE UNDO BUTTON AT ANY TIME…

It should look like this:   if you notice I erased her shoulder and left the face alone…up to you.

Now you’re done and all that is needed is to tag it.  Make sure the font matches the quality of paint, soft avatar = soft flowing font...etc

In your font box when you click it open, the only boxes that should be checked are: Floating and Antialias.  The only color boxes, that you should be using with your fonts is in the Styles box: Strokes should be X out and the only color that should be showing in any box is Fill box.

Like the jewel color, the font color should be taken from something within the avatar as well, so it all melds together beautifully.  I took the color from the jewels, sometimes you need to make it a shade or two darker, go ahead but try to remain within the general color scheme.

This is our final avatar:    Font: Krunstler Script Size: 22

No Shadow for the lettering with this dark color, or it muddies it up, only use the shadowing for lighter font colors.

For the jewel that dangles between the eyes or resting on the forehead, I use a rain drop tube, and colored to match the avatar.  Size it down to fit what you’re using it for.

Hope you enjoyed and this tutorial will be useful to you.  Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who needs help with veils.
