For Love
It is for Love that I sink to this depth;
For Love that I play the fool
and tred barefoot through the snow,
That I serenade her with songs
at midnight under the moon's glow,
And why I bring myself to steal
with the hope that she might own.
Therefore, it is Love's fault I plead so much;
Love that creates this pathetic speech
stuttering from a passionate boy's mouth,
It is for her that I endure swells
of laughter that rise from the midnight crowd,
And that I use such strong resistance
as they drag me to my cell downtown.
