Before buying a dog from any breeder, please do your homework. A good breeder uses their dogs in competition or work- Conformation, hunting, etc. They should also test their dogs prior to breeding- OFA (for hips), eye tests, etc. Reputable breeders will be interviewing YOU as much as you are interviewing them- they want to make sure their dogs go into great homes as much as you want a great dog.
Pet store dogs may seem lovely, however the majority of them come from Puppy Mills- they are not vaccinated, barely fed, mass bred, and disposed of when they are no longer able to breed. Buying a puppy from a pet store only helps keep this process going- If we can end the demand for pet store puppies, we will stop them from supplying the puppies. It may be very difficult to walk past that cute puppy in the window, but it is the only way to end this horrible process.
