Piedmont is a beautiful Arabian gelding. Actually, he was a breeding stallion until April 1999. At that time, his owner, Jenny Lowry-Kamentz decided that she needed a good gelding more than she need another stallion, especially since she had so many of his get and full siblings in her herd. So, he got cut. He didn't seem to mind too much because he is now playing the role of lead stallion in a small herd of mares. (Flicka is the lead mare and was his consolation prize after the gelding.)
Piedy is a bay, 15h. horse with a white star, snip and several white socks. He is a handsome fellow who is really laid back. He was laid back as a stallion, too, and many people thought he was a gelding before he was gelded. Piedy was one of the most decorated halter stallions in NC, and placed 12th in the Nationals in the early '90's. He made very pretty babies. Now he gets to show that he is more that a pretty horse.
Piedy was never shown in performance as a stallion. His sire, AA Manhattan, dominated his owners attention in performance, so that Piedy really was little more than green broke when I started working with him in June of '98. Since Flicka was being used for lessons, I didn't have any other horse to ride except for Piedy. I spent all of the following Fall, Winter and Spring teaching him that there were other gates than walk, jog and run like the wind. Once he learned that lesson, Jenny and I started fine tuning his headset and mindset. He is doing very well. His first show under sidesaddle was at the end of August, 1999. See below to see how he did. His owner has always wanted a National Sidesaddle Champion, and we feel that with Piedy, we have a real shot at it.
By the way, the reason Piedy is called "Speedy Piedy" is due to his reaction to the other horses in the ring at his first performance show. He decided to race the whole lot, and his rider spent the entire class trying to convince him to slow down. The nickname stuck, though he no longer races in performance classes. |
