The MiG 21 Fishbed is the workhorse of the Indian Air Force. It is a 60s Soviet Fast jet. It fared poorly in the 6-day war (1967) but that was because of the poorly trained Arab pilots. But it more than redeemed its reputation in the 1971 war against Pakistani aggression and in the Vietnam war. It also instilled fear in the hearts of Phantom ( F4) pilots over the skies of Vietnam.

It is also the workhorse of the IAF. The IAF has around 45 squadrons of MiG 21s. Since the programme to replace the MiG 21 with the indigenous LCA ( Light Combat Aircraft)fell flat, the MiG 21 remains the backbone of the IAF.
