| Australia, or Commonwealth of Australia as it's officially called, has about 19.5 million inhabitants. The official language is English (they wish they spoke proper English!) and also Italian, Greek, Chinese and Vietnamese are spoken a lot. The area covers about 7.7 million square kilometers, which is about 185 times The Netherlands! However, the density is a lot lower, 2 people per sqkm! It is the sixth largest country in the world. The capital is Canberra, that was built after some struggle between Melbourne and Sydney who should be capital. Distances are huge. To give an example, it takes about 10-11 hours to get from Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane by train, it even takes two or three days to get to Perth! |
