| D. Auratus "Micro Spot" Micro Spot Dart Frog This is the third kind of dart I added to my collection. I bought them from Understories enterprises in December 2007. They are another colourful and large morph of auratus, reaching 4-5cm. They are supposed to be a selected morph out of turquiose and bronze morph, and like many auratus morphs variable in itself. My group consists of individuals with small spots and some with larger spots/banding/striping, Many of the group if not all have the classic bulls eye throat marking. The markings started off a dark brown almost black on some individuals, others were a clear bronze. They are definately getting lighter as they age, to a bright bronze with a darker outline. As they age the spots are also supposed to break up into a finer network or smaller spots. Base colour ranges from a cool mint mettalic green of various shades with some individuals looking to have a bluer cast or more golden. An interesting trait of these frogs (or perhaps just my group) is that half of them have blue eyes. That may grow out as they get older or may be permanent, but thats the first blue eyed frog i've seen! Probably on par with the costa ricans for shyness. They get flightly when handled, but are fine for watching and will come running for food. There is always one or 2 frogs just sitting in the open on the leaf litter at all times, not hard to find at all. |
