| "Saxilby, where is that?" you might well ask, and, having found out that it is a village near Lincoln, "So what!" you will probably add. Well, if the Flying Scotsman (4472) hadn't stopped there in 1969, I probably would never have developed an interest in trains, plus I started most of my trips from this station. Mystery tours from Lincoln to Bath, Weston Supermare, Llandudno, Edinburgh. 3 day rover tickets to get to places like Crew, Derby, Preston (nobody noticed Preston was off zone thank heavens). Day trips to Retford, Chesterfield, Doncaster, and all for 3 pounds or less. Thanks to my paper round and Saxilby station I toured Britain. Even without leaving Saxilby you could see every class of main line diesel locomotive except for class 50's, the hydraulics and BRCW's. Locomotives coming from or going to Doncaster works were regularly dragged through. The smell of fresh paint from overhauls returning to East Anglia was some times overpowering!. On many Saturday nights and occasionaly Sundays the East Coast main line services were diverted through, bringing the sound of Napier engines accelerating off the Fossdyke bridge. Friendly signalmen (rest in peace Ken) allowed me to share the fire through the night when nights were cold. 5 bells was a sound guaranteed to raise hopes of finaly catching a glimpse of 9000 "Royal Scots Grey", the Deltic needed to complete the class. I finaly "copped" 9000 at Markham Moor crossing (long since gone), which was within cycling distance. Summer Saturdays would bring double headed Sulzers and EE4 namers through on their way to/from the coast. The Harwich boat train was good for a Stratford 37 and Gresley buffet car, where as the the morning workman's train was good for anything. It was a fantastic sight to see the steam escaping from the heating pipes in the early morning. Freights were regular as clockwork. My only regrets are that I could not afford a camera at first (my first one, a 110 had the habit of chopping the photo. I never did get used to it), and I didn't record as much as the rest of the world would have liked me to. Things happened that today would be unthinkable. The guard and driver who made an unscheduled stop to let me off the last Retford to Lincoln service of the day: Thank you. The guard who allowed me to travel even though I didn't have the full fare home: thank you too. The drivers who allowed me into the cabs, and then would drive me from the loop into the station, stop and drop me off, thank you as well. I hope you enjoy these pages as much as I have enjoyed the memories awakened by creating them. If you think you can add to this site, please get in touch. I will be delighted if you can jog (or correct) my memory, and if this site means something to you, we probably knew each other! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
