"Hidden Thoughts"
Krivenko's Office, SVR Headquarters
June 6, 2008, 1330 hours

"Are you sure?" Krivenko asked the man sitting opposite him.

"Yes. It wasn't easy but we managed to track the transmissions, and the order was generated by him," the man replied.

"But he is a Politburo member. Why would he do such a thing?"

"I wouldn't know Comrade Chairman, but the fact remains: he made the order. We also have evidence that he has provided funds through a secret account. He is dirty. He needs to be dealt with."

"And how would you suggest we deal with him?" Krivenko enquired.

"Kill him," Valentin Pavelevich Elistratov replied.

"Why take such a drastic course of action?"

"It is necessary. The man has indirectly killed innocent people and funded a number of terrorist organizations. This can not be allowed to continue!" Elistratov said forcefully.

Krivenko said nothing. He leant back in his seat and thought about the situation. He knew that something had to be done about Petrenko but he wasn't sure that killing him would be the best solution. After all the man was a Politburo member with much power and influence, and even if Elistratov couldn't see the problems associated with dispatching someone in such a high position then at least he could. The SVR were not sanctioned to carry out such offensive actions regardless of the need. Consultation with the Politburo was something that had to be done in such cases, and he was pretty sure they would object to the murder of one of their own no matter how dirty he was.

Didn't Elistratov see that?

Yes, he did, but that didn't deter him. There was something going on, he could sense it. Elistratov wanted Petrenko dead for some reason, and he had to find out why. Elistratov never made a move he didn't have to, which was why he had never been caught doing something he shouldn't have. Sergei Semyonovich had always said he was dirty, and Krivenko had reason to believe him. Despite that there was no concrete evidence, no proof to take before the Politburo. Somehow Valentin Pavelevich Elistratov had always managed to dodge the bullet, which was why he remained in charge of Directorate K.

"I agree," Krivenko finally said, "but I must consult with the appropriate people first. Let me rest on this one and I will get back to you."

Elistratov grunted his disapproval but said nothing. He simply nodded his head and stood up before leaving through the door.

Krivenko sighed. This was going to be a difficult one to deal with. He switched on his computer and loaded his calendar program. Sifting through the various meetings he had to attend, looking for gaps in his schedule so that he could discuss the matter. As he did this one entry caught his eye; he was due to meet with Sergei later on in the afternoon. That brought a smile to his face. He could use Sergei as a sounding board, work out different scenarios, probabilities, timelines, and possibly find a solution to his problem.

For the first time all morning he actually looked forward to a meeting.
