"It's mine I say"
Bella sat as Paige fussed over he shoulder, applied pressure when
she was told to, move her hands when it was necessary. She hadn't
said anything to anyone since getting back to the van despite
questions. Her mind had stopped for awhile, better it happen now
than later. She indulged in the silence, not really hearing
anything else around her. There were voices, Declan, Paige, Simon,
none of them particularly happy but she just let them go for now.
They were half way back to the safe house when she decided that she
had had enough hiding and came out of her trance. Looking at Lachie
for a moment she got up and moved over to the body. Still she said
nothing. It must have looked for all the world like a tender good
bye to a man from her past as she reached out her hand slowly
towards his face. But before her hand could touch his cheek she
lowered it and reached inside his jacket and pulling something out
of the inside pocket. A disc. After a split seconds pause the
returned to her seat and finally registered Paige looking at her as
if she had just asked a question.
Bella seemed a little dazed as she asked, `What?"
"Are you alright?" The medic looked deeply unhappy and it appeared
as if she was attempting to keep her mind on the job in order to
prevent her mind form following other paths.
Bella nodded, and after a second she smiled easily, she thought for
a second that she must look like her brother, it was the same
smile. "Yeah I'm alright."
"What happened out there Bella?" This time it was Simon from the
drivers seat.
She considered for a moment before responding. "That depends. Do
you want the truth of a version of it?"
"The truth."
"Alright. I shot Lachie in the head after he had been unarmed and
was secured."
"Why?" He seemed disturbed by this, the concept almost beyond his
ken.
"Hmmm, well…" She couldn't think of a reason, she had just done
it,
she didn't know why. "Ask me tomorrow, I'll come up with something
by then."
There was an uneasy air coming from the drivers seat now, he didn't
like that answer but it was all she had right now.
"he opened fire of you, we can claim self defence". Declan's Irish
accent floated through the air and Bella looked at him closely. He
barely knew her and he was willing to try and cover for her. She
considered it but eventually shook her head meeting his accent with
her own.
"No, I can't be bothered weaving lies, I did this I'll face the
consequences." Her eyes became distant as for the first time she
registered that there would be consequences and that they may take
her away from field work. She frowned, "whatever they may be."
Silence.
They had almost reached their destination when she spoke again, this
time directly to Paige.
"Paige." The blonde looked at her, clearly troubled, or perhaps not
clearly, but Bella could see it. "I am only going to say this once
alright?" The blonde nodded, "This is mine. What happened out
there? My doing. You didn't do it, you didn't let it happen. Do
not under any circumstances try to take this from me." The van
stopped and Bella moved to the doors, she looked over her shoulder
at the blonde before swinging them open, "You'll piss me off if you
try." Her voice was pleasant, as if nothing had gone wrong, she
wasn't threatening the other woman, merely making a statement.
She exited the van before Paige had a chance to respond and walked
purposefully toward a waiting Gray…and Rebecca? Bella wondered for
a second if anyone had called in the events of the meeting, but a
quick glance at those two told her all she needed to know. They had
enough information to make them look very very grumpy.
