| Galice, Oregon | ||
Galice is located in Josephine County, northwest of Grants Pass, between Galice and Almeda along Galice Hwy. Established in 1852, Galice was once known as "Galiceburg" which was a short distance up Galice Creek from Skull Bar or Lower Town at the mouth of the creek. The present community is downstream from the creek on a bench above the Rogue River. Galice was established when rich placer gold finds brought large number of miner families into the area. One of the largest mines in Southern Oregon, the Old Channel, is in this area among many others.![]() The little hamlet of Galice is located northeast of Grants Pass and is the home base for many outfitters and fishing guides. This and the fact that Galice is close to the 84-mile segment of the Rogue River set aside by Congress under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, is why Galice is known as the "Gateway To The Wild & Scenic Rogue River." |
