"Go Away"

Jordan stared dismally out the window, watching the trees and fields go by. Madeline was dead, and she knew she should feel relieved, but somehow she didn't. The bitch was still in her mind, her clear, calm, hypnotizing voice. She was still steaming from what she learned of the chemical Madeline had given Saf. She knew Madeline was always prepared to go that extra distance, making damn sure that her plan would go ahead. Madeline didn't fail.

Joshua, however, she was just as uneasy about him as she was Madeline and perhaps even more so. Madeline had only played mind games with her, but never actually threatened her into doing something like Joshua did. Madeline had said he was the one in the wrong, but he had adamantly denied. Joshua had come out a hero, saving both Paige and Baz, but was he that hero he proclaimed to be? She wasn't too sure. She knew that Joshua was prepared to go to any length to get the job done, very similar to Madeline's mentality. She thought back to him threatening her, perhaps that was the only way he could've done it. He had said that if he had done anything, worked with Oversight it would've tipped Madeline off.

She wondered what exactly Joshua was going to do now? Continue the project? She went cold all over, thinking about it. Either way though, she probably wasn't going to find out about it, unless of course he asked something of her again and laced it with threats.

Jordan looked down at Brian, who was still fast asleep, with his head in Paige's lap. They were almost back now, which she was thankful for because it meant she could get out of the truck, away from these people, especially Joshua. Baz and Joshua had exchanged jokes and sarcasm for the first part of the drive, but after awhile had become their own counsel and became silent and quiet.

She looked over to Paige and half smiled at her, wanting to ask her how she was doing, but knew this wasn't the place. Paige looked back at her and shrugged slightly. Paige had to be okay. Saf worried her more because she had been taken with Michael, back to Section One. She shivered involuntarily, thinking she could've just as easily been taken back there too. But she wasn't. She knew someday she would get over her so-called section-jitters, but when, would be another story entirely.

Baz in himself seemed fine. She didn't know why, but she felt some strange need to ensure alpha remained whole and happy (more or less, she knew she was being quite nave with the happy bit).

Joshua finally pulled up in front of her house. She was dreaming and anticipating her flannel sheets and comfy bed when Joshua said, "Jordan, why don't you come back to Paige's for awhile?"

She shook her head, "That's alright. I'd rather just sleep in my own bed."

"Are you sure you don't want to come back to my place? I have plenty of room."

"No, it's alright. It looks like it's going to be a great day. I'll give you a call later, and maybe we can go out on the boat," she replied mischievously and maybe they could drown Joshua.

Paige nodded and Jordan saw that Joshua was getting out of the truck; she wished he would just leave her alone. Out of the truck now, she hoisted her bag up onto her shoulder and made a b-line for the door. Joshua, however, had fallen in step besides her.

"Jordan, I just wanted to say thanks, I really appreciated your help with this," Joshua commented.

She just stared at him, not believing a word that he was saying, truthful or not. He continued, "I couldn't have done it without you."

She nodded this time and replied, "Next time, just ask, give me a reason and leave the threats out of it."

She opened the door and went inside. She knew the threats probably wouldn't stop and if they did, the reasoning would only be lies, but her life was a lie, well, the majority of it, so why not make it more complete.

She listened to her messages while she was heating up some soup from a can. It was pea soup, not very appetizing, but it somehow reminded her of her childhood.

"Jordan, it's Alyssa, just wanted to let you know that everything is going well and we are excited to see what you will be bringing back from the book find. Cheerio"

She smiled; she knew she could trust Alyssa to keep things going when she was "away." After coming back from the last mission, she had telephoned Gray and asked him if he could get her a rare book or antiquity for her bookstore, as she has told her staff that she was away. He had said he would, but it would take a few days at least. She had told her staff she'd be away for at least two weeks, nevertheless, she really should go pick it up from Gray, it had been almost three weeks since her phone call.

1345hrs

Jordan stretched and sat up. She had slept well, thankful nothing had haunted her dreams for once. In her bare feet she walked to the bathroom to brush her teeth. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were still puffy from sleeping and there were new bruises on her arms. She lifted up her shirt and inspected her upper body, a no bruises there, but noted the ones on her legs. She didn't know why she was so interested in her bruises, but hell, gave her something to think about while brushing her teeth.

She reached for her phone and dialed Paige's. They would have to be awake by now. It rang once, twice, three times before it was answered by Paige's sleepy voice.

"Come on sleepy, it's time to get up. You've gotta be hungry," she said into the phone.

"Hey Jordy," Paige replied. "Now that you mentioned it I am hungry."

"Great! Now get your ass out of bed, the lot of you and drive you're selves over here so we can get some real food without having to cook it," she replied cheerily and loudly.

"On one condition."

"What?"

"You stop yelling in my ear."

Jordan chuckled at Paige's words, "Sure, it's a deal. Now get up."

"Okay, I'm up. I'll see you in a little while k?"

"Sure, later dude," she replied and hung up.

Knowing they'd be at least an hour, she jumped into the shower, and then got dressed, choosing a red tank top and khakis. Afterwards, she grabbed the phone and called Gray.

"Hi Gray, it's Jordan," she replied when he answered.

"Jordan, I was going to phone you later today actually. Looks like you beat me to it."

She laughed quietly, "That's just how I am."

"Well, I assume you're calling about your book then? We've had it for over a week now, but I didn't phone you because I knew you were taking some time off from the store."

"Ya, that's right." She was glad that he hadn't called. "I was thinking of coming to pick it up tomorrow. What time is good for you?"

"Ohanytime, but preferably in the early afternoon."

"Okay, sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow then," she confirmed and replaced the phone on its cradle when there was a knock on her door.

She grabbed her sweater, even though she was certain she wasn't going to need it and opened the door to see Baz's face.

"Hey, change in plans. I got called in, so I'm gonna drive you back to Saf's so you can pick up your car and go to Paige's from there, ok?" he asked.

"Oh sure, no prob Baz," she replied locking her door. "Thanks for coming to pick me up."

"Anytime Jordy, now lets get a move on."

1505hrs
Jordan watched as Paige showed Brian how to cast the fishing line. They were way out in the bay, gently swaying back and forth with the waves. Both of them looked cute together. She wondered what would become of Brian, she hoped for a good life for him, least he ever end up in a place where he is used and taken for granted.

She stared into the water, looking down past her line that disappeared down into the darkness. The water gave this glassy, clear reflection, like when you didn't wipe the Windex off the windows. It was relaxing to stare at, watching the reflection shift and change shape with the constantly moving water. She sat there, just staring.

"Hey, you okay?" Paige asked her.

She jumped at the sound of Paige's voice. "Hey, sorry, just lost in my thoughts I guess. I sure hope Saf will be okay."

Paige nodded, "Ya, me toobut I think it will be, maybe not just yet, but soon."

Jordan nodded in reply and looked over at Brian again, he was staring into the water, looking at his fishing line. "Hey," she called out to him, "that life jacket you're wearing doesn't make you invincible."

Brian looked over to her and smiled, taking only a small step back. She shook her head, trying not to laugh. Boys.

In the end, Brian was the only one who ended up catching any fish. Could've been the fact that she had failed to put any bait on her hook and she had watched Paige discreetly let a couple fish go. Brian was ecstatic about being the only one who managed to catch some fish. Whether he knew their game or not, he didn't let on.

"Hey Brian, I think you got yourself a future career here," she said to him.

"Ya, as long as you don't mind the smell of fish guts and what not," Paige said jokingly at him.

Brian merely shook his head and laughed out loud, then asked when dinner was going to be ready.

"Just as soon as you wash them hands of yours and help set the table." Paige replied.

2004hrs

Jordan jumped down onto the dock and secured the rope, while Paige cut the engine. The sun was in the process of setting, giving off an orange glow. Brian was asleep on the bench in the galley. The meal had made them all sleepy, but both Paige and herself hadn't give in to their drowsiness.

It has been fun and she was glad to have gone out. Paige emerged from the galley with Brian in tow, still sleepy, but awake. After locking the boat up, they all headed back to Paige's apartment. When they reached the door, Jordan said her good-byes, she knew Joshua was in there, and didn't want to go in. She hoped that Paige couldn't sense her wariness and discomfort of being around Joshua.

"I'll catch up with ya later, I've got some stuff I need to do before I go back to the book store again."

Paige nodded in understanding. "Sure thing, I'll call you tomorrow or something."

"Great. Hey Brian, if you want a book, get Paige to drive you over, it's one me. Anything you want okay?"

Brian smiled at her and nodded in reply, but didn't say anything though. She waved at them both and headed to her car. She didn't quite know why she was being so damn motherly to the boy, but for all intents and purposed she guessed she just wanted to do something nice for someone.

Tomorrow she would be seeing Gray and she wondered how much he knew about what they had all been up to the last couple of days. Really though, there was only one way to find out.
