I was almost there Just a moment away from becoming unclear Ever get the feeling you're gone I'll show you the way, the way I'm going So I run, hide and tell myself I'll start again with a brand new name And eyes that see into infinity ~ Capricorn (Brand New Name), by 30 Seconds to Mars Outside of Duck, North Carolina May 28, 2008 Capricorn Facility 2010 hours She was beautiful. Not like Madeline, the one that reminded him of the mother, but she was still beautiful. He found people like her, the ones with the photographic memory, they were always beautiful. And secret. They were always able to hide it like they had to or something. Like hiding it was the most important thing, the one thing, that would enable them to function and live in the world. He didn't have to do that. He didn't have to hide. He could always spew out his knowledge and be accepted, but Paige, just like Brianne, they had to hide it. He didn't know why, he just knew that they had to. She would be the One. He knew this as soon as he met her. He also knew that she knew this. They connected just like he connected to all the students at his school. They all worked on some sort of different plane, they weren't like everyone else, and it was in this plane, this alternate place that only allowed the special people to go, this was where they connected. He couldn't explain it. He didn't know why this was either, just that it was. And he was surprised that Paige worked on the same plane he did. But he was grateful. Because she would be the One. "We're almost done, you know," he said with a yawn as he watched her. He loved the way she tucked her long blonde hair behind her ears and the way her eyes darted around the computer screen in front of her as she chewed on her lip. He especially loved when those eyes settled on him, like they did now. They were always accepting, always understanding. They were his eyes, just a different color. "We still have a lot of work to do," Paige said with a wry smile. "It's mostly done. The rest is a cake walk. Even Baz could do it." "What?" the funny hair colored man said realizing he was being talked about. "I said..." "I heard what you said smart ass," Baz said punching his arm lightly. Baz was fun, too. He was like Paige's always amusing, quick with a joke, sidekick. He knew these two definitely had fun together. And he could see the way Baz's eyes moved over Paige. Baz was protective of her and that was good. Because he was only nine and nine year old boys couldn't protect their friends like adults could, like Baz could. And Baz would protect him, too, when the time came. And that time was coming. He had already packed his worn out back pack up and now he just waited. "I'm not a smart ass," Brian replied. "Watch your mouth," Paige admonished which made Baz laugh. "Don't listen to her Bri, she's got a potty mouth on her, too." "Is this true?" Brian turned to her. He grinned as she squirmed before hautily returning to the computer. "Sometimes," she finally said with a grin. Brian rolled his eyes and swung his feet. "Are we going to sleep soon?" he asked pouting. "Yeah," Paige said, "you can go if you..." That's when he heard it and watched as both Paige and Baz stiffened. He didn't know what it was but it definitely sounded bad. Like a pop. Like a gun. "Brian, go to your room," Paige said with a strange tone to her voice. His eyes flicked over the lab as two of the Section men ran towards the door. "Brian," she said more forcefully. "Go to your room, get under one of the beds, the one in the corner, stay there and DO NOT come out until Baz or me come get you. Do you understand?" The tone in her voice was scaring him. He didn't want to leave. "Paige," he whined. "Go, now, hurry," she pulled him off his chair and pushed him towards the room they had been using to sleep in. He squirmed in her hands, "Paige...what about you?" "Go Brian...I'll be ok, just go, now." He stepped away from her as she stared at him, pleaded with her dark green eyes full of worry. He nodded and ran for the room. Madeline and Carter were moving into the main lab now and they glanced at him only briefly like they knew where he was going. Would that be bad, he wondered briefly. Would it be bad if Madeline and Carter knew where he was? Not that there were many places to hide in the place but you'd be amazed at where a nine year old could find a hiding place. The popping sound was getting louder and now there was yelling. He was in pure panic mode now but yelled at himself to remain calm. He grabbed his back pack and it finally broke spilling spiderman tshirts, socks, and even his stupid underwear on the ground. "Shit," he muttered and began stuffing everything back into it. NOW his back pack decided to break? Now? Of all times. He got everything back in and stared at one of the beds, the one in the corner of the room. That was not a good hiding place. "But Paige told you to go there," he whispered to himself. But that was definitely not a good hiding place. Hide. He wavered for only a moment longer before he scrambled under the bed and pushed himself into the corner clutching his broken back pack. He watched from his vantage point on the floor as a pair of feet with black boots came into the room briefly. It was for only a moment then they were gone. He let out a small breath. Luck? Not likely. Whoever it had been was probably in a rush and probably looking for an adult. He didn't think an adult, not even Paige, could fit under one of these beds. It was amazing where a nine year old could hide. Return |
