My obeisance to Sri Karunakara Guru, who has reached the pinnacle of Supreme Guru-hood and who is in the form of Supreme God, and is the healer of worldly delusion.

achintya avyakta ruupaaya nirguNaaya guNaatmane.

samasta jagadaadhaara muurtaye brahmaNe namaH.

 

Salutations to Brahman, who is of unthinkable and indefinable form, who is with and without attributes, and is the support of the entire universe!

Oh Suta, Suta, Greatest Seer! You have reached the other shore of all knowledge! Please disclose to us the attributes of Guru, which destroy all sins,

I am reciting to you Guru Geeta, which is the form of Mother, and which destroys ones afflictions. You all sages please listen with great attention and joy.

Vyaºijne smasenm! zukaid muin v<idtm!,

baexyNtm! prm! tTvm! mXye muin jnm! Kvict!,

puraa kailaasa shikhare siddha gandharva sevite.

tatra kalpa lataa pushhpa ma.ndire atya.nta su.ndare.

vyaaghrajine samaaseenam shukaadi muni va.nditam.

bodhayantam param tatwam madhye muni janam kwachit.

pranamra vadana saaswat namaskurvantam aadaraat.

dR^ishhTwaa vismayaapannaH paarvati pariprit chati.

 

Once on the peak of mount Kailas - which is most beautiful like a palace of flowers and is adorned by celestial powers like Sidhas and Gandharvas - Shiva

was discoursing among the assembled sages about the supreme truth, seated well on a tiger skin and surrounded by worshipful sages such as Suka. Parvati, whose head is always bowed due to constant obeisance, implores Shiva thus in bewilderment.

vidhi vishhNu mahendraadhyai va.ndya khalu sadaa bhavaan.

You are indeed being worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Indra etc. always. Then whom do you worship, when you are the object of all worship!

kena maargena bho swaamin dehi brahma mayo bhavet.

Oh Lord! Kindly tell me that path by which soul attains union with God. Oh, Lord! I bow unto your feet.

Shiva said

mama ruupasi devi twam atastat kathayaamite.

lokopakaaraka prashno na kenapi kR^itaH punaH..

 

Oh Goddess! You are my nature. This question which is beneficial to the world has not been asked by anyone before. Therefore, I am revealing it to you.

ivkLpm! yStu k…ivRt s> nrae gué tLpg.

yo guru saH shiva prokto yaH shiva saH guru smR^ita.

vikalpam yastu kurvita saH naro guru talpaga..

 

One who is termed as Guru is God. One who is understood as God is Guru. And the man who doubts this goes to sleep on the bed of Guru.

durlabham trishhu lokeshhu tat shruNushwa vadaamyaham.

gurur brahmaviNa naanyat satyam satyam varaaNane..

 

Oh beautiful one! I will tell you that which is very rare in the three worlds. Please listen. There is no other truth than Guru God. This only is the truth.

Since the four Vedas, six sciences, eighteen Puranas, epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, practices like Mantra, Yantra, Seduction, exorcism etc., spiritual cults like Shaiva, Shakteya, Sankhya etc. and many other paths together delude men, people are led astray.

Oh, Dear! Japa (the recitation of mantra) Tapa (spiritual austerity) Vows, visiting of holy places and also the path of Knowledge and Meditation come to naught without knowing the truth of Guru.

I shall tell you for your compassion how a soul after freeing itself from all sins becomes purified and becomes godly. It is through service at the feet of the blessed Guru.

The glorification of the holy name of ones own Guru will verily become the glorification of the infinite God, and the contemplation of one’s own Guru's name will verily become the contemplation of the God eternal.

swaashramam cha swajaatim cha swa kIrtim pushhTi vardhanam.

etat sarvam parityaajya gurumeva samaashrayet..

 

A person should take refuge only in Guru, leaving aside everything such as one’s own duty, own caste, own fame and desire for wealth.

 

GU - RU

 

The syllable 'Gu' means darkness and the syllable 'Ru' is called light. There is no doubt that Guru is the Supreme God who destroys ignorance.

Guru is Brahma (the god of creation), Guru is Vishnu (the god of sustenance), Guru is the god Shiva (the god of annihilation), and Guru verily is the Supreme God. My salutations to that auspicious Guru!

In the time of distress, there is indeed only one greatest friend, i.e. Guru, who exists as righteousness in all beings. My salutations to that auspicious Guru!

For those tormented souls, who burn in the fire of threefold suffering- spiritual, temporal and destiny - Guru only is the supreme Ganges. My salutations to that auspicious Guru!

In the case of Shivas wrath, Guru is the savior. In the case of Gurus wrath, there is no savior. Finding the Guru of human race, one should completely take refuge in Guru only.

Like the bee, not getting honey travels from flower to flower, so also a spiritual aspirant should seek Guru after Guru to gain divine knowledge.

shrI guroH Pparamam ruupam vivekam chakshhur agrataH.

The unfortunate men do not see in front of their eyes the auspicious and supreme form of Guru with discrimination, just as the blind do not see the sunrise.

abhyastai kimu dIrghakaala vimalair vyaadhi pradai dushhkaraiH.

praaNaayaama shadaiH aneka kaaraNaiH dukhaatmakai durjayaiH..

yasmin nabhyutate vinashyati balee vaayuH swayam tatkshhaNaat.

praaptam tat sahaja swabhaavam anisham sevetamekam gurum..

 

What with practices like Pranayama and several hundreds of other means that cleanse the soul prolonged that produce afflictions that are strenuous, miserable and unconquerable? On whose ascendance, the uncontrollable life force immediately becomes subdued on its own, only that Guru, who has attained the ever abiding form, should always be served.

yagnino na muktaasyuH na muktaaH yoginas tathaa.

tapasa apino yuktaaH guru tatwaat paraa~N mukhaaH..

 

Performers of the fire ritual are not liberated, likewise are the Yogis not liberated. Even though imbued with austerity, they are not liberated due to their apathy to the truth of Guru.

\;ya isÏa deva*a> gué sevat! pra'œ muoa>.

na muktaastu ga.ndharvaaH pitru yakshhaastu chaaraNaaH.

R^ishhayaa siddhaa devaadyaaH guru sevaat paraa~N mukhaaH..

 

Gandharvas, Manes, Yakshas in the astral world, and Rishies, Sidhas and Gods are not liberated due to their indifference towards the service of Guru.

ÉvTyev ih tSya<t kale iv]ep muLktm!.

api sa.mpUrNa tatvaGYo guru tyaagI bhavet yathaa.

bhavatyeva hi tasyaa.nta kaale vixepa mulkatam..

 

Even if one is the perceiver of all principles, if he becomes the forsaker of Guru, there will be great derangement at the time of his end.

 

muiniÉ> pÚgEvaRip surEvaR ziptae yid,

kalm&Tyu ÉyaÖaip gué> s<Çait pavRit.

munibhiH pannagairvaapi surairvaa shapito yadi.

kaalamR^ityu bhayaadvaapi guruH sa.mtraati paarvati..

 

Oh, Parvati! Guru saves a person, even if cursed by the sages, snakes or gods. Guru saves one even from the fear of death.

Az´aih suraXyí ýz´a> munyStwa,

gué zapaeppÚSy r][ay c k…Çict!.

ashaktaahi suraadhyashcha hyashaktaaH munayastathaa.

guru shaapopapannasya raxaNaaya cha kutrachit..

 

Even the gods and the sages are incapable of saving one who is cursed by Guru, wherever he is indeed.

 

ivjaniNt mhavaKym! gurae> cr[ sevya,

te vE sNyaisn àae´ae $tre vez xair[>.

vijaananti mahaavaakyam guroH charaNa sevayaa.

te vai sanyaasina prokto Itare vesha dhaariNaH..

 

Those who know the meaning of great principles through service at the feet of Guru are only called Sanyasis. Others are attired with the clothes (of a sanyasi).

 

gué àsadat> SvaTmin ATmaram inrI][at!,

smta mui´mageRn Svm! AaTm}anm! àvtRte.

guru prasaadaataH swaatmani atmaaraama nirIxaNaat.

samataa muktimaargena svam aatmaGYaanam pravartate..

 

By the grace of Guru, a person see his own self, submerged in the bliss of Supreme God and attains in Guru equipoise of mind, which is the path of liberation. Knowledge of the Self works thus.

nityam brahma rasam pItvaa tR^ipto yaH paramaatmani.

Indraan cha manyate ra.nkam nR^ipaaNaam tatra kaa katha..

 

Guru, who is contented in Supreme God, drinking always the nectar of god consciousness, considers even Indra, the lord of gods, as a pauper. Then what is there in the case of kings?

yadi apyaadhIna nigamaaH shadanganyaagamaH priye.

adhyaatmadIni shaastraaNi GYaanam naasti gurum vinaa..

 

Oh, Dear! Even if all Vedas are learnt along with the six-fold Vedic sciences, and also rituals and other spiritual and philosophical doctrines, 'self knowledge' cannot be gained without Guru.

shivaruupam swaruupam cha na jaananti yahaswayam..

 

A person without Guru does not know his own 'self', which is in the form of bliss. Such a man, without Guru, can be called a beast, insect or bird.

ivhay zaô jalain guémev smaïyet!.

tasmaat sarva prayatnena sarva sa.nga vivarjitaH.

vihaaya shaastra jaalaani gurumeva samaashrayet..

 

Therefore, with all efforts, devoid of attachments and steering clear from the thick of doctrines, one should take refuge in Guru only.

The Guru, who is bereft of knowledge, and who proclaims untruth, and who is a swindler should be discarded. One who does not know his own rest, how can he help others to attain peace?

swayam tartum na jaanaati param nistaarayet katham..

 

What is the knowledge of a rock in taking to the other shore a cluster of other rocks? How can one help others to swim when he himself does not know how to swim?

na va.ndaneeyaaste kashtam darshanaat bhraanti kaarakaH.

varjayet tan guroon dUre dhIrasyatu samaashrayet..

 

Such people are not be saluted, who are miserable by sight and creators of delusion. Such gurus should be discarded very far. One should take refuge only in the courageous.

paakha.nDinaH paapa rataaH naastika bhedabuddhayaH.

strIlambata duraachaaraH kR^itaghnaaH baka vR^itayaH..

 

Swindlers, sinners, unbelievers, the prejudiced and womanizers, the corrupt and the dishonest and those who act like a crane (crane sits silently but gulps down its prey when becomes handy)

kaimn> ³aeixníEv ih<öz! cNÎ> zÄz! twa.

karma bhrashhTaaH xamaa nashhTaaH ni.ndya tarkaishcha vaadinaH.

kaaminaH krodhinashchaiva hi.msrash chanddaH shattash tathaa..

 

And those who have lost the path of action and patience, those who are unyielding and abominable, contentious and quarrelsome, greedy and wrathful, violent and cruel,

GYaanaluptaH na kartavya mahaapaapa stathaa priye.

eabhyo bhinno guruH sevyaH eka bhaktya vichaarya cha..

 

The above categories of people who have lost wisdom and are sinners should not be accepted as Gurus. Oh Dear! Gurus who are different from these should be known and served with devotion.

gUDDho dridaashcha preetaashcha maunena susamaahitaH.

sakR^it kaamagatovaapi pa.nchadhaa guru rIritaH..

 

There are five types of Gurus; The impenetrable; the resolute; the pleased; the silent and the fulfilled.

 

Anenyt! Évet! kayRm! tdœ vdaim tv iàye,

laekaepkarkm! deiv laEikkm! tu ivvjRyet!.

anenayat bhavet kaaryam tad vadaami tava priye.

lokopakaarakam devi laukikam tu vivarjayet..

 

Oh Dear! I shall tell you the duty to be observed by such seekers. Oh Goddess! They should endeavor for the welfare of the world, but at the same time they should discard worldly attachments.

 

In the Guru Geeta 2nd Chapter concluded

sa eva satguruH saaxaat sadasad brahma vitamaH.

tasya sthaanaani sarvaani pavitraani na sa.mshayaH..

 

He only is the noble Guru, who knows the real, and the unreal, and the Brahman. All abodes of that Guru, without doubt, are virtuous.

 

smuÔevE ywa taeym! ]Ire ]Irm! jle jlm!,

iÉÚekm! Ée ywakazm! tdaTma prmaTmin.

samudrevai yathaa toyam xIre xIram jale jalam.

bhinnekam bhe yathaakaasham tadaatmaa paramaatmani..

 

Water only exists in the ocean, milk in milk, water in water, and the very sky only manifests as many. Soul also has similar existence in the supreme god.

 

twEv }anvan! jIv> prmaTmin svRwa,

@eKyen rmte }ain yÇk…Ç idvainzm!.

tathaiva GYaanavaan jIvaH paramaatmani sarvathaa.

aikyena ramate GYaani yatrakutra divaanisham..

 

So too, the enlightened soul ever exists in the supreme god, and always rejoices in the supreme god, irrespective of the time and place.

saamyena ramate GYaani diva vaa yadi vaa nishi.

evam vidho mahaa mauni trailokya samataam Vrajet..

 

The enlightened soul rejoices with equipoise, whether it is day or night. Similarly, the subdued one shall ascend tranquility of the three worlds.

gurur devo gurur dharmo gurau nishhThaa param tapaH.

guroH parataram naasti trivaaram kathayaami te..

 

Guru is God. Guru only is Dharma. There is no greater penance than the submission and devotion to Guru. I swear this to you repeating three times.

 

xNya mata ipta xYnae gaeÇm! xNym! k…lae Év>,

xNya c vsuxa deiv yÇ Syat! gué Éi´t>.

dhanyaa maataa pitaa dhayno gotram dhanyam kulo bhavaH.

dhanyaa cha vasudhaa devi yatra syaat guru bhaktitaH..

 

Oh, Goddess! That mother is blessed, that father is blessed, blessed is that lineage and clan, blessed also is that mother earth, wherever there is a soul devoted to Guru.

vidyaa dhanam balam chaiva teshhaam bhaagyam nirarthakam.

yeshhaam guru kripaa naasti adhogacchhati paarvati..

 

Oh, Parvati! Those who are blessed with knowledge, wealth and power, their fortune become meaningless without Guru; if there is no grace of Guru on them, they descend to the lowest.

Guru Gita should never be narrated even in imagination among those who are irreverent, deceitful, wastrel, unchaste and infidel.

guravo bahavaH santi shishhya vitaapahaarkaH.

tamekam durlabham manye shishhya hritaapa haarakam..

 

There are plenty of Gurus who grab the wealth of the disciples. But a Guru is very rare who removes the sufferings from the soul of a disciple.

chaaturyavaan vivekees cha adhyaatma GYaanavaan shucheeH cha.

maanasam nirmalam yasya gurutwam tasya shobhate..

 

Guru-hood glitters in one who is accomplished, discriminative and virtuous. Guru-hood shines in a master of self-knowledge and who is of sinless mind.

Gurus are virtuous, serene and renounced. They are not talkative and are free from the emotions of desire and anger. Gurus are of spotless character and are masters of the senses.

Gurus are known by various classifications such as 'Soojaka'. The intelligent aspirant should examine them well on his own and worship only that Guru who is established in the truth of self-knowledge.

Oh, Goddess! A person, who has mastered several worldly sciences and articulates them in beautiful language, such a Guru is called 'Soojaka'.

Oh, Parvati! Please know, one who authoritatively discourses about the duties that are laid out according to the divisions of caste and ones' station in life, is called 'Vachaka'.

Oh, Parvati! The initiator of mantras, such as' Aum Nama Shivaya', is called 'Bodhaka'. He is higher than the two mentioned above.

Oh, Dear one! The Guru who depicts the world, which is the abode of all sorrows, as finite and indicates the path of renunciation, is called 'Vihita'.

One gets such a Supreme Guru after doing meritorious actions spanning several births. After getting such a Guru, the disciple does not go again to the worldly bondage.

Supreme Guru is who, observing the performance of miracles etc. and attractions of Yogis and others, considers them as fickleness of mind.

The Guru, who perceives his body as inert, and own self as immutable, and who cuts asunder the desire for woman and wealth, is called the Supreme Guru.

kulam dhanam balam shaastram baandhava sodara Ime.

At the time of death, wealth, power, knowledge of sciences, ancestry and kith and kin, these will not be of any help. Only Guru can take you to the other shore of death.

kulameva pavitram syaat satyam svaguru sevaya.

tR^iptaaH syu kula devaaH brahmaadi guru tarpaNaat..

 

By the truthful service to ones' own Guru, that family indeed gets purified of all sins. The worship of Guru satiates the family gods also, such as Brahma and Vishnu.

gururekohi jaanaati swarupam daivam avyayam.

tad GYaanam yat prasaadena naanyathaa shaastra koTibhiH..

 

Guru only knows the immutable form of the Supreme. That knowledge is gained through the grace of Guru and not through millions of doctrines.

shivam kechid dharam kechit vidhim kechitu kechana.

shaktim dvaivam iti GYaataa vivadanti vR^ithaa naraaH..

 

Some conceive God as Shiva, some as Vishnu, some as Brahma and still some as Goddess. People thus discourse about this in futile.

These distracted men, like animals are devoid of the knowledge of own self. Those who are indifferent to the teaching of Guru do not know the supreme truth.

Abandoning the company of evil people, and saving oneself from wrong actions, the mind of a man attains purity. Such a purified soul deserves initiation from Guru.

chitta tyaaga niyuktaas cha krodha garva vivarjitaH.

One who has discarded the mind full of desires and is perfect without anger, conceit and devoid of duel approach, such a purified soul deserves initiation from Guru.

etat laxaNa yuktatvam sarva bhUta hite rataam.

Those who have the qualities described above, and who live for the welfare of all beings, such men of purified life deserve initiation from Guru.

Oh, Goddess! I have disclosed everything in brief, which is the sum and substance of Vedas. Oh, Wife, there is no other noble course for men than the abode of Guru.

nityaaya satyaaya chidaatmakaaya navyaaya bhavyaaya paraatparaaya.

shudhaaya budhaaya nira.njanaaya namostu nityam guru shekharaaya..

 

Praise to the everlasting, truthful, blissful Guru. Praise to the undefiled, noble, highest Guru. Praise ever to the emperor Guru, who is immaculate and in the form of intelligence and bliss.

I constantly adore the lotus feet of Guru, by whose grace I know all this as me, and established in me, and thus know the nature of the Supreme Self.

aGYaana timiraandhasya vishhayaakraanta chetasaH.

GYaana prabhaa pradaanena prasaadam kurume prabho.

 

Oh Lord! I am suffering from the disease of blindness due to ignorance and am overpowered by many desires. Please have mercy on me by kindling the light of knowledge.
