Issue #1

This is the very first issue of Steve's Damn Life, which I drew on and off from July to December 2002. Don't expect the time it took to complete to reflect the quality at all, I was just lazy making it. I have this thing with my comics.. one or two months after I make them, I hate them. So naturally, I hate this issue. To me, the drawings are really crude and the story is poop. This may be true of the future issues as well, but I've only come to realize the crappiness of this one. Give it time.

Anyway, the main problem I had with this issue was setting up the premise. I'm terrible at this (and endings- go figure) because all the comics I've drawn more than one issue of have been based on a flimsy idea that I slopped onto paper as quickly as possible. However, when I began drawing this one I already knew exactly what was going to happen. Not a good thing for me, because it made for a pretty joyless drawing experience. Yay! I have a strange rash on my leg.

So in this issue we meet our protagonist Steve, antagonist Becky, and all-around good guy Satan. From the beginning my intent with Becky was to make her the epitome of all that is evil, and it's pretty apparent throughout the comic. I still can't really think of any way to describe steve's personality.. to me, he's just Steve. I write his lines without thinking about how they reflect him as a character, it all just comes out naturally. What I can see is in the next couple issues you'll see him being pretty damn pathetically obsessive, which made issues 2 and 3 a lot of fun to make. Speaking of which, bear with me here. I
think it gets better.
