Housing

The Choctaw people lived in small cabin
or hut they called a Chukka. It was
shaped like a bee hive. The walls were
made of mud, cane, and long tough grass.
A post was in the center. There
was a hole in the top that allowed light in and smoke to pass out, since they
made fires in the center of the cabins.
The door was made of mats, and was only 3-4 feet high. There are no windows in the Chukka.
The beds inside the Chukka were raised
about three or four feet from the ground to keep them away from fleas. The beds are also their table and chairs. They stored pumpkins and potatoes underneath
the beds. The furniture was very
sparse. Inside the Chukka was also a
large pot in which they cooked their food.
