A wonderfully written story by my pal Bethy.
Chapter 1
The air around her sweltered with heat. She felt little beads of sweat forming on her forehead as she quickly grabbed the towel next to her, wiping them away. Propping herself back up in the chair she sat in, she took a sip of her water. It was times like this when she regretted leaving her quaint little hometown in New England.
A whistling sound caused Sheridan to look up. Carefully placing one hand on her exceedingly large stomach, and the other on the chair beneath her, she pulled herself to her feet. Sheridan slowly made her way into the kitchen of her tiny Burbank townhouse. The water was boiling now, with steam causing a newly formed layer of fog on the cabinet, diagonally above the stove. Pouring the boiling water into her tea cup which held nothing but a peach flavored tea bag, she wearily sighed. "Only one more month..." she muttered, her hand stilled placed on her stomach. Tiredly, she headed down the hallway, towards the nursery.
The nursery wasn't completed yet, but it already brought a smile to Sheridan's face just being in there. Every night she would sit in the rocking chair, beside the crib, longing to be gazing down at her precious baby sound asleep. She knew that her wish would be fulfilled in less than a month, but still -- she couldn't wait. The past month it had become ritual for her to sit in the rocking chair, softly humming or talking to her unborn baby. The long, hot, humid, California-July days had been becoming increasingly lonely for Sheridan.
As her eyes searched the small room, the picture on the baby's dresser caught her attention. Luis. She put the picture there not even a week before, after she found it at the bottom of the suitcase which she was packing for when it came time to go to the hospital. No matter what he had done, no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't manage to get him out of her heart. She ached all over as the picture stared back at her. Why couldn't things be different? She gently lifted the picture to her hands, staring down at it, fighting back the tears forming in her eyes. Memories filled her head. It all happened the morning after they had found themselves in a tight situation.
On the way to her nephew, Ethan and his fiance Gwen's wedding party, they found a little boy on the side of the road, explaining how his mother was in labor and the midwife was preoccupied with another birth. They knew they had no choice but to help the woman. Thank God Luis was trained to deliver babies, because Sheridan didn't know the first thing about it. The experience of helping to bring another human being into the world together seemed to draw them closer and Sheridan had never felt more connected to anyone than she did to Luis that night. Whenever she heard Luis confess his love for her that night to the young boy, Joey, Sheridan's heart no longer belonged to her -- it was Luis'. That night had changed her life forever, because as quickly as Luis took her heart, he soon broke it into a million pieces.
**FLASHBACK**
The birds chirped outside the window and Sheridan's eyes fluttered open as the sun beamed in. It was a beautiful autumn morning. A smile escaped her lips as she recalled the previous night. She never knew making love could be so wonderful, until she had experienced it with Luis. First the first time in her life she was actually making love. Sure, she had been with men in the past, but nothing could compare to Luis and she knew that nothing ever would.
Her arms searched the bed as she rolled over and found the other side empty. She quickly sat up, wondering where Luis was. Was he upset? Did he regret what they shared? Millions of thoughts flooded Sheridan's mind.
Throwing on her bathrobe, she crawled out of the cold bed. "Luis...?" she called, praying that maybe he had just gotten up early. "Luis?" She wandered into the livingroom of the cottage. There was no sign of Luis anywhere. She made her way into the kitchen -- empty as well. "Luis...?" She frantically continued searching the small cottage. Her eyes then fell upon a small note on the coffee table in the livingroom. She sighed in relief as she realized it was from Luis.
Sheridan,
I'm sorry I had to leave so early. I got called into the station. Sam thinks they might have a lead on the drug cartel and wanted me to come check it out. Crane security is keeping an eye on you -- stay at the estate!
We have so much to talk about. I miss you already just writing this note. I was watching you sleep this morning -- you looked so peaceful, so beautiful. I love you. I'll be back soon and we can go out for breakfast.
Love,
Luis
A smile took over Sheridan's lips. He didn't regret it! He truly meant it when he said he loved her last night. Sheridan was ecstatic with joy as she threw her arms in the air and fell back on the couch, happily. Grinning, she got up and headed for the shower. She knew Luis told her to wait there, but she couldn't! She had to see him. What could happen to her on the way to the police station anyway?
After getting ready, she headed out the cottage, humming to herself gleefully. As she approached her car, she caught Luis out of the corner of her eye near the gazebo. Started towards him, she noticed he was in an in depth conversation on his cell. Curiosity got the best of her and she decided to listen, being as it was obvious he didn't see her -- or at least didn't show any signs of seeing her.
Luis let out a stifled laugh. "Yeah... she actually believes I love her. Can you believe it?" As Luis paused, Sheridan felt her heart sink to her stomach. What was he talking about? Surely, she misunderstood him. She moved in closer and everything was starting to feel like dj vu.
"Oh, don't worry. I intend to make sure Sheridan Crane stays out of the way. And... if she sticks her nose where it doesn't belong, there's always the option of getting rid of her." Sheridan's heart sank even further. Get rid of her?! Using was one thing, but now... Luis was a murderer? It just didn't make sense. Tears welt up in her eyes as a sense of betrayal and hurt crept up inside of her. She immediately ran for the cottage, packing her bags and heading for the airport, boarding the next flight out to California.
**END OF FLASHBACK**
It was 8 months later now. She yearned to just run back to Harmony, into his arms. She wanted so badly for him to share the experience of bringing their baby into the world, for them to be a family. She knew that could never happen. She wished everyday that what she heard had been some kind of twisted misunderstanding; but, every time she tried to come up with a reasonable misunderstanding, it was hopeless.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. Sheridan fell forward, in pain, grasping onto her stomach. The doctor had said that she might go into premature labor, but she wasn't expecting it to be so soon. Her hands aimlessly searched for the cordless phone which she knew was somewhere on the floor, yet she couldn't see it. As soon as her hands gripped the phone, she hurriedly dialed her neighbor's number.
"Hello?" his voice sounded on the other end. "Alex? Alex, it's Sheridan! I.. I think it's time..."
Chapter 2
Alex paced worriedly in the waiting room. He kept glancing at the door, for a sign of a doctor to come fill him in on what was going on. He took a second glance, as Sheridan waltzed in through the double doors and gave her a questioning look.
"False alarm..." she mumbled, in distressed. Part of her wished it would just be over with, and when she walked out of the hospital, it would be with her baby in her arms, not walking out empty handed. Yet, at the same time, the thought of going through labor alone terrified her. For some reason, she still clung onto the hope that Luis would be there with her every step of the way.
She knew Alex had good intentions of being there for her, but they both knew he wouldn't be able to stomach the experience. He made it clear to her on more than one occasion that the woman anatomy disgusted him. She held back laughter as the image of Alex's facial expressions during the mention of a woman's body part, popped into her head. She didn't know what she'd do without Alex. He had been the best friend to her the past eight months. She felt safe with him -- and what woman wouldn't? There was no threat. He didn't want anything more from her but her friendship (and definitely nothing beyond that...). Unfortunately, he was everything Sheridan wished for in a man - sweet, kind, honest, good looking. His only downside: He was gay.
"Are you okay?" Alex asked with concern.
"I've been better."
Alex had a thoughtful look on his face for a moment. "I think I know what'll cheer you up!" He finally exclaimed.
"Oh, really? Funny you know... because I don't even know what'll cheer me up..." That was a lie. She knew exactly what would cheer her up, but all the same, it was an impossible dream.
Alex sturdily nodded his head. "Ice cream!" He beamed, trying to bring a smile to his friend's face. "My treat! Come on!" Before Sheridan knew it, she was being dragged out of the hospital, into the hot summer night.
************************
Sheridan sat at the bench, lightly tapping her fingers against the wooden table. Resting her head on her hand, she let out a small sigh, wondering what was taking Alex so long. Her eyes were drawn to the children playing on the swing set across the way. She watched as a little girl fell off the swing. Her instinct forced her out of her seat, ready to run over to the girl, until she saw a man scoop her up in his arms. Sheridan's heart ached as she watched the man kiss the little girl's knee, which now wore a scrape from her fall. The content look on the little girl's face put a smile on Sheridan's. She wondered what her little girl was going to do without a father to kiss away her tears whenever she fell. Tears burned in her own eyes at the thought.
"Still hungry?" Sheridan looked up.
"What took you so long?"
"Well, the line was long, so I decided to pick up a paper to read while I was waiting." He handed Sheridan her ice cream. "They didn't have any colored sprinkles, so I figured chocolate would have to do. Is that okay?" He searched her face for an answer, but she seemed to be lost in thought - lost in thoughts of Luis.
"Chocolate sprinkles..." she said in a rather dazed tone.
Alex looked on worriedly. "Yes... chocolate sprinkles. Have you and chocolate sprinkles had bad run-ins in the past? Cause if that's the case, I'll be sure to go back and demand you get your colored sprinkles!" He put on a dorky smile, trying to make her laugh... or at least acknowledge his existence. "Anything for my Sheridan..."
She finally broke from her trance and cracked Alex a small smile. "No, I think I'll survive. But thank you anyway."
"Okay, good. As long as you're happy, I'm happy." He announced, not so convincingly, as his eyes trailed off to a beautifully built man passing by. Sheridan rolled her eyes at the scene.
"Oh, I forgot to ask you..." He continued, finally drawing his attention from the man leaving the park. "The newspaper." He put it down in front of her.
"What about it?"
"There's an article in there, about a man --"
"I should have known it was about a man..." Sheridan cut him off.
Alex gave her a stare lacking amusement. "Yes, a man. A man by the name of Crane." He took a lick of his ice cream. "I know it's a common name, but I was just wondering if there was any relation."
Sheridan's eyes searched the paper for the article. She didn't have to look too far, because staring back up at her on the front page was a large photo of Ethan. "Ethan..." she whispered. How she missed him.
"Ah... you DO know him! He's pretty hot... think maybe you could hook us up sometime?"
"Alex! He's not gay!" Sheridan continued reading the article. "And... he's getting married in four days." Sheridan stated in disbelief.
"Oh." Alex remarked, dumbfounded. "Well, maybe I should have read the article... but... you have to admit... its hard to tell..." He said, crossing his leg, and leaning over, pointing at the picture for Sheridan to see.
Sheridan ignored his comments and continued reading the article. "I can't believe this. How did I miss SO much in eight months..." Alex could see the regretful look on Sheridan's face.
"Who's the girl?" He said, pointing to the picture of Ethan and his fiance on the next page.
"Theresa. Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald."
"Lopez-Fitzgerald?! As in Luis --" Sheridan nodded at him before he could finish his sentence.
"Yes, Luis' sister..."
"And Ethan would be related to you... how?"
"My nephew."
Alex spit out his ice cream, shocked, and Sheridan gave him a disgusted look, which Alex ignored.
"Wait... let me get this straight. YOUR nephew is marrying LUIS' sister?" Sheridan nodded, like it was common knowledge. "And Luis is allowing this? After everything you told me about him..."
"I really don't think he has much say in the matter. I'm sure he doesn't approve. In fact, I'd be shocked if he attended the wedding."
"But, it's his sister..."
"Alex, you have no idea how much Luis hates my family..." The tears started to return. Those damn tears. It seem as if Sheridan could never free herself from them. Alex placed a comforting hand onto of hers.
"I have to go, Alex. I have to be there for Ethan. This is the most important day of his life."
"But, Sheridan --"
"I have to."
"Do you think that's a good idea? I mean... you just up and left eight months ago without a word to anyone. Now, you go back and just expect them all to let you leave again without a fight? I know you said nobody there gives a damn about you, but I find that hard to believe. Who couldn't love you?" He gave her an encouraging smile. "And this Ethan... you seem to be close to him"
Sheridan wiped away a tear. "I am. That's why I need to go."
"And Luis? What if you see him..."
"I'll deal with it. I'll only be there for a few days anyway. I don't have to speak to him." She looked down at her hands. "There's nothing to say anyway." Alex sighed, knowing how untrue that statement was.
"Well, promise me you'll be careful? Personally, I think you should be in bed the rest of the month, but..."
Sheridan rolled her eyes yet again, and dug through her purse. She pulled out her cell and started dialing.
"What are you doing?"
"Something I should have done a while ago."
Chapter 3
The airport was crowded, everyone rushing to get to their flight. Sheridan pushed through the rowdy bunch with a suitcase in one hand and the other protectively placed on her stomach. Glancing down at the number on her ticket, and then to the signs above, she hurriedly followed the numbers until she approached her destination. Once she reached where she was supposed to be, she looked down at her watch and let out a frustrated moan. Fifteen minutes until her flight. She sat down in a nearby chair, looking around, trying to decipher what she could do to pass the short time. The sudden ringing of her cell phone caused her to jump a bit. She reached into her purse, pulling it out.
"Hello?"
"Sheridan? It's Ethan." Sheridan smiled at the sound of her nephew's voice.
"Ethan! Is something wrong?"
"No, just wanted to check to make sure you hadn't changed your mind."
Ever since Sheridan called last night, Ethan had been more than enthused about reuniting with his favorite aunt. He and Theresa had spent all night making preparations for her stay. He hadn't clued her in yet, but they didn't intend on letting her leave. It took every ounce of control for Ethan not telling Theresa that her brother was going to be a father; but, he had promised Sheridan he wouldn't tell a soul and he wasn't about to break his word. Theresa had been thrilled to learn about the baby, but Ethan would have loved to see the look on her face had she known she was going to be an aunt for the first time.
"Of course not!" Sheridan chimed. "I wouldn't miss your wedding for the world!"
"Great! Theresa and I have a surprise for you!"
"Aww... you know how much I hate surprises!" Sheridan let out a small laugh. "Seriously, you didn't have to do anything for me..."
"Well, it was Theresa's idea. You can murder her if you don't like it."
"I'm sure I'll love it -- whatever it is." Just then, Sheridan watch people start for the entrance to her flight. "Oh, Ethan... I have to catch my flight. I'll see you in a bit?"
"Yup. I'll pick you up at the airport in a few hours."
"Great. See you then!" Sheridan quickly folded up her small phone and rushed to catch her flight.
*********************
Ethan's eyes frantically searched the airport. 'Sheridan's flight should have been here by now.' He thought, glancing at the watch on his wrist. A light tap on his shoulder caused him to quickly turn around.
"Sheridan!" His arms flung around his aunt and he hugged her to the best of his ability with her stomach causing a gap between them. He looked down at her stomach, taking notice at how large she was. Ethan was no expert, but he got the feeling that baby wasn't going to wait an entire month. Sheridan looked like she was about to explode at any given moment!
"Sorry, I'm late!" He gave her an apologetic kiss on the cheek. "I was held up in traffic. Apparently, everyone is going crazy thanks to the hurricane warning. But, you know how those things are. It's never as bad as they say. Ready to get out of here?"
Sheridan nodded, not saying a word. Ethan looked on worriedly. "Are you okay?" She nodded again, still not speaking. "Are you sure?" A more worried look grew on his face. "Because you don't look okay..."
Putting aside the queasy feeling in her stomach, she spoke up. "I'm fine, Ethan. Would you stop worrying! You are as bad as Alex!" She forced out a sweet smile, covering the subtle pain she was experiencing.
Knowing how stubborn Sheridan was, Ethan decided to take her word for it. "Okay, let's get out of here."
********************
Ethan pushed the door to the cottage open, letting Sheridan inside. He carried in her luggage and watched as she flopped herself onto the couch.
"Hey, hey, hey! What do you think you're doing?" He teasingly gave her a smile.
She looked up at him curiously. "What? Am I not allowed to relax now? In case you forgot, I fending for two..."
He let out a little laugh. "I don't think I could forget... and that's exactly why you can't relax! It's time for your surprise." He reached out a hand, helping her up.
"This better be good..." She forced out a teasing-like smile, hiding the nausea she was feeling.
He led her through the kitchen, towards a door leading into the back room. Sheridan gave him a baffled look. "My surprise is in the... storage room?" Ethan just nodded his head and continued pushing the door to the small room open.
"Now, before we go in... Theresa was very sorry she couldn't be here to show you. She wanted more than anything to be here, but there was a mix up with one of the bridesmaid's dresses and she is in Boston trying to straighten it out." Sheridan nodded, more curious now than ever to see what the surprise was. He then stood back, presenting the door with his right arm, queuing her to come in. She stepped into the tiny room, and her breath was swept away by the sight.
The walls were painted pale pink, with white boarder outlining the top of the room. On the boarder were various scenes from fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel. White lace surrounded the small window and her eyes were drawn to the crib below. The bedding in the crib was a pale pink, matching the walls, and embroidered on the pink pillow was the scene from Cinderella where the prince slipped on her glass slipper. Above the crib hung a mobile, four different scenes from the same four fairy tales dangling down, ready to spin when turned on. Beside the crib sat a white wicker rocking chair, with matching pink cushioning. Her eyes gazed the room taking note of the matching white furniture -- the dresser and changing table. Her eyes where brought back to Ethan, wide with amazement.
"Ethan, I... when did you do this?"
Ethan continued looking back at her proudly. "After you called me last night, Theresa came up with the idea. We were already cleaning out the storage room to turn into another guest room anyway, so, Theresa designed the nursery, I made a few calls. We painted the walls last night. Then this morning, Theresa and I got up early, put up the boarder, and around 10:00am, the furniture was delivered... and there you go!"
A tear escape her eye at the sweet gesture. She felt her voice catch in her throat and an extreme amount of guilt was over her as she confessed to him. "Ethan... I wasn't planning on staying."
"Sheridan... did you really think I'd let you go back that easily? You and the baby belong here, with your family and friends. I want you nearby where I can keep an eye on you and make sure you're okay." Sheridan cringed at the thought. She needed to be the place that was furthest away from a certain man, and that place certainly wasn't here. At the same time, the uneasiness she had been feeling all day had been draining emotionally, and now was not the time to argue.
"I'll think about it, okay?"
Ethan let out a triumphant smile. "Good. Listen, I really wanted to stay with you and help you settle in, but I'm supposed to be at a hospital board benefit at the Seascape in less than an hour. I'd offer you to come, but you look like you could use the rest." Sheridan nodded wearily at his suggestion, showing him to the door. "You sure you'll be okay?"
"I'm sure!" Sheridan snapped, unexpectedly. Ethan jumped back in surprise a bit. "Okay... be sure to call me if you need anything..." At this point, Sheridan had practically pushed him out of the door. "I will... stop worrying! Enjoy your party!"
She quickly shut the door and as soon as it shut, she leaned up against it. Taking in a deep breath and slowly exhaling, both hands met on her lower abdomen gently rubbing in circular motions. Sheridan painfully let out a gush of breath. "Not again..."
Chapter 4
Sheridan closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the door, and continued rubbing her stomach. After a moment, the pain slowly subsided. Not knowing what to make of the pain, she moved from the doorway, leisurely pacing back and forth in the living room. Should she tell someone? She didn't want to jump to conclusions. After all, yesterday it was only false labor. Obviously, that's all it was today -- false labor. She nodded her head a bit, trying to convince herself. "False labor... that's all..." she stated out loud, reassuringly. After wandering around the livingroom for ten minutes straight, there had been no more signs of pain. She needed something to preoccupy her mind -- maybe get some tea, relax... she knew just the place to do it.
*****************
The smell of coffee beans filled the air. Sheridan stood in the entrance of the Book Cafe, taking off her coat which was damped from the rain outside. She looked around at the familiar scene before her. Everything was the same as it had been eight months ago. People of all ages gathered in the small cafe, chatting, sipping coffee, relaxing. It had such a homey environment and Sheridan loved it. She sauntered over to the vacant couch and jadedly sat down, sinking into the cozy cushions. The magazine on the table beside her caught her attention and she soon found herself engulfed in an article about abortion. The thought of abortion made her stomach churn. How could someone take the life of an innocent, defenseless child? It was just beyond Sheridan's comprehension. Instantaneously, her hand met her stomach in a protective manner.
"Sheridan?!" A surprised voice sounded from across the room. Sheridan looked up to see Beth rushing over to her, glowing with happiness. "Oh my God! Sheridan!"
The notion in Beth's voice made Sheridan feel as though she had been missed and it brought a smile to her lips. "Beth..." She stood to her feet as the woman greeted her with a hug.
"How have you been?" Beth chimed, as her eyes soon caught glimpse of Sheridan's oversized belly. She wasn't quite sure what to make of it, so she decided to fight the urge to ask anything at all.
Sheridan decided to avoid the subject of the baby growing inside of her as well. Speaking of the baby meant speaking of Luis, and that was just a sore subject -- especially with Beth. "I've been... okay. How about you?"
"Great! I've been great!" Beth beamed a thousand watt smile. She seemed like a changed woman to Sheridan. Sheridan could only wonder what had Beth so happy.
"I'm glad. What have you been up to?" Sheridan questioned, just as her eyes fell upon the diamond hovering over Beth's ring finger. Beth was engaged? Boy, she had missed more than she had thought! But... to who? The thought lingered in Sheridan's mind as Beth sighed and continued to speak.
"Oh, this past month has been crazy! The baby is a handful... colicky... but, God love him... he's the cutest thing in the world!" Beth glowed with pride.
"Baby??" Sheridan's eyes practically bulged out of her head.
"You didn't know I was pregnant when you left? Hmm... that's odd. I would have thought Luis would have told you..."
"L..Luis? Oh..oh, no... he... didn't tell me..." she sputtered out the words which were caught in her throat. Oh my God! Beth had Luis' child. The engagement ring. The ring she was wearing. She was wearing Luis' ring! She was going to marry Luis! Sheridan's heart sunk as everything came together. She placed a hand on her stomach and the room seemed to be spinning around her.
"Sheridan? Sheridan, are you okay?" Beth was leading Sheridan over to a nearby table, helping her into a chair. She looked on at Sheridan, worriedly.
"Hmm? Oh, yeah... I'm fine..."
"You don't look fine... here. I'll go get you some water." She scurried out of her seat and behind the counter. Sheridan looked after her in amazement. Luis had been using her more than she ever imagined. He had taken her to bed, taken advantage of her, and the whole time he knew that another woman was pregnant with his child, a woman he was most likely expecting to marry from the get-go.
Before she knew it, Beth was placing a glass of water with a slice of lemon in front of Sheridan. Sheridan quickly took a sip of the water, hoping to alleviate the lightheadedness she was feeling.
"So..." Beth looked at Sheridan expectantly, hoping for her to make the initial move to get the conversation rolling. She nodded towards Sheridan's stomach and gave her a questioning look. "Are you going to explain, or leave me wondering?"
Sheridan forced a smile. There was no way she was telling Beth about the paternity of the baby growing within her. No one could ever know. Luis couldn't know. Luis wouldn't know. In fact, Sheridan promised herself at that moment Luis would never know. Sure, she told herself many times she'd never tell Luis; but, deep down she knew the moment she saw him she'd confess right then and there. But now... no, now things were different. Now, Luis had a child with Beth, and they were getting married. Sheridan couldn't let her baby be "the other child". She wouldn't let her baby go through the pain of living with the fact she was concieved out of a one night stand. How would she feel knowing her father had no intentions of pursuing a relationship with her mother and was only out to use her? She'd rather her baby have no father at all.
"Well?" Beth was persistant in getting Sheridan to spill. "Who's the father?"
Sheridan glanced at her nervously. "It doesn't matter."
"Sure it does! Come on, Sheridan... at least tell me what's bothering you."
"You don't know him. And nothings bothering me..." Sheridan defensively noted.
Beth frowned and took the hint. "Well, just know that I'm here if you need someone to talk to." Beth offered her a warm, helpful smile. "I should really get back to work. The customers are waiting."
Sheridan almost felt guilty for snapping at Beth. Beth hadn't done anything wrong -- she seemed genuinely concerned. An apologetic smile can over Sheridan's face. "Thank you Beth... I'm sorry, it's just... been a long week."
"I understand. Remember what I said -- I'm always here. While I'm at it, would you like something to eat, drink...?"
"Um, some tea would be nice."
"Tea it is!"
"Thank you..." Sheridan smiled to the best of her ability as Beth headed back to work. Her hands went to her head, gently rubbing her temples. Her eyes were lured to a couple sitting at the table next to her. They were holding hands, gazing lovingly into each others eyes. They seemed so in love. She solemnly wondered if she would ever find that kind of love. She thought she had found it with Luis... how wrong was she? She only hoped she could avoid a run-in with him while staying in Harmony. Unfortunately, the odds of that were slim.
Her eyes followed the couple towards the door, as they left the premises. Suddenly, the sight before her caused her to gasp. Her heart practically skipped a beat as her eyes locked with his intoxicating hazel ones. Her chest felt heavy, finding it harder and harder to breathe. "Luis..." she throatily whispered.
Chapter 5
He stood there, in the doorway, hand clutched to the baby carrier, which held, tucked inside, a sleeping one month old. Locking his eyes with her beautiful, sparking, blue ones, he felt his heart race a million miles per minute. Was she really sitting there before him? Or was it his mind playing tricks on him once again? Ever since she left eight months ago, he swore he'd seen her walking about random places in Harmony -- through the park, near the station, at the bar, in the Book Cafe -- just about everywhere. Yet, every time he attempted approaching the woman, he had been devastated to learn it wasn't Sheridan. This time though, this time, it really was her. He was sure of it. It wasn't his eyes witnessing illusions. No. He'd know those eyes anywhere. Those were the eyes he fell in love with -- those were the eyes of the woman he loved.
Despite her attempts of striping her eyes from Luis', she just couldn't bare to do it. She could get lost in those eyes forever. Then the thought of those eyes being full of lies invaded her head, and she suddenly found it easier to do so. Resting her cheek against her left hand with her elbow placed on the table, she swiftly shifted her head in the opposite direction of Luis.
Taking notice of this, Luis started to work his way over in her direction. There was no way he was letting her get away this easily. They had so much to talk about, so many things to resolve. She had just run out on him eight months ago. It broke Luis' heart. He was positive there was something special between them, he could feel the connection. Why couldn't she feel it? Why didn't she trust him? He just couldn't understand. He had been nothing but honest with her. She was such a remarkable woman -- the most amazing woman he had ever known. How could someone use her? Hurt her? It pained Luis that Sheridan could think that of him. If anyone ever caused Sheridan pain in his presence, he knew he could kill them with his bare hands right there. How could Sheridan not see how much he loved her? Or the most important question: why wouldn't she allow herself to see it? Their night of passion had meant so much to Luis and he was certain it was the same for Sheridan. Had he been mistaken?
"Sheridan..." He said, placing the baby carrier on the ground beside him. The sleeping child didn't move an inch. Eyeing her carefully, he took notice in her appearance. She was seated closely to the table in front of her, with her left arm resting on it, and her right arm stretched across her stomach. He couldn't be sure from his view, but it looked as though she had put on some weight. Of course, it could have just been the way she was seated or the shirt she wore. Not that it mattered to him, anyway. All that mattered to him was finding out why Sheridan had up and left, and finding a way to gain her trust, having her back in his life. The last eight months had been hell for him.
"Sheridan..." His voice became softer and more pleading. Still, she refused to look at him. "Please, Sheridan... would you please... just look at me." He felt his voice catch in his throat and tears burn in the back of his eyes. What had he done so horrible that she wouldn't even look at him?
Her head turned to face him ever-so slowly, her eyes glistening with tears. Those tears shot straight to Luis' heart and he longed to just take her in his arms and make all her pain go away. She stared at him intensely for a moment, not sure of what to say. Damned if she was going to say anything at all -- she had nothing to say to that bastard! Nevertheless, just looking at him made her forget anything bad she had ever heard him say. The tears crept down her cheeks and she couldn't bring herself to say a word.
Luis pulled a chair up beside her. As he sat down, he soothingly brought his hand to her cheek, caressing her delicate features. Gazing at her with obvious concern, he asked the only question that could come to mind. "Why... why Sheridan? Why did you leave me... why?" His voice nearly cracked from the sick feeling he got in his stomach. She paused for a moment, just staring at him. Coming to her senses, she quickly jerked away from his hand. Why was he doing this to her? Why couldn't he just leave her alone. She thought he had moved on with his life. He had a child and was engaged to be married for crying out loud! Couldn't he just leave her alone and go back to his perfect little life.
"You know damn well 'why', Luis..." she whispered, searching through her purse on the table as a distraction from looking at him. Pulling out her make-up bag and cell phone she finally found what she had been looking for. She threw her make-up bag back in the purse, but left her cell out. She decided that she'd be needing it soon, because she was ready to call a cab and get the hell out of that place.
He looked on at her while she dabbed the white tissue on her cheeks and under her eyes, as the tears started to vanish. "If I knew, do you honestly think I'd be asking?" His voice still soft.
Sheridan decided to ignore his question, as her eyes caught hold of the little baby, asleep in his carrier. She turned in her chair, gazing down at the little cutie. She bent over, to the best of her ability, and gently stroked the back of her fingers across his chubby little cheek. His little, round, pudgy face had a pinkish-white complexion, and his closed eyelids bore a set of long, black eyelashes. Her hand then moved up to his thick, dark brown, almost black hair, and then back down to his cheek again. He was definitely Beth's baby. "He's so beautiful..." she glanced up at Luis for a moment. "Can I...?"
"Hmm? Oh... sure..." He watched as she reached down and gently took the sleeping baby into her arms. This scene really wasn't processing in his mind though. His mind was to preoccupied on one thing -- her round, oversized stomach. Was she...? No. She couldn't be... surely, she would have told him if he was going to be a father! He continued to observe her belly, which the baby was now resting on, with her arms cradled underneath him. He had to say something. He had to ask her about it. She was pregnant. It was as clear as day. From his calculations, he speculated she was about eight months to term, which meant it was his. She was pregnant with HIS child. A wave of shock washed over him.
"What's his name?" She questioned, her eyes still transfixed on the child bundled in her arms. She was surprised she wasn't resenting this baby. But, how could she? He was the sweetest thing she'd ever seen -- so sweet and innocent.
Luis finally drew his eyes away from her stomach, and moved them to her face. He looked down lovingly at the little boy. "TJ... his name is TJ."
"TJ..." she repeated, still staring at him. "It fits him well..." she smiled down at the baby again. Luis loved watching Sheridan with babies. She had this maternal instinct that always showed through whenever she had one in her arms. It came so naturally for her. He knew she would make the best mother one day, only he hadn't imagined it would come so soon. Soon she would be cradling their baby in her arms. He knew he had to bring up the dreaded subject, which he was sure Sheridan was trying to avoid at all costs. He wasn't sure how to go about it, but he knew he had to find out if the child was his. He wasn't about to walk away empty handed if it was either. Hell would freeze over before he wouldn't be part of his child's life -- he'd make sure of that.
He looked up at her a little tentative. "Sheridan..." She didn't look up at him, knowing what he was about to ask. She felt her heart jump. She couldn't tell him the child was his. She knew he'd demand to be part of their baby's life and that wasn't going to happen. She panicked trying to find away out. "Sheridan, look at me..." His voice was sturdy and serious. She managed to finally look up at him.
"Sheridan... you're... you're... pregnant..." He splurged out the words.
She looked back down at the baby nervously, hoping that if she just didn't say anything, the conversation would disappear.
"Sheridan!" Luis practically jumped out of his seat. Sheridan quickly looked up at him, her nervousness apparent in her face. "Don't you think I deserve some answers here? You think you can just skip town, then wander back after eight months, pregnant no less, without ANY explanation? No, I don't think so Sheridan. I think you have some explaining to do, starting right now." Luis took in a deep breath after his big outburst. He watched as she turned her gaze back down to the baby, trying to avoid him again. He sat back in the chair beside her, and cupped her face with his hands forcing her to look at him.
His voice softened again. "Sheridan, please..." He paused, his eyes glued to hers. "Is the baby mine?"
Sheridan opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She just looked him in the eye.
"Is it Sheridan?" He asked this time in a more demanding tone. "Is the baby mine?"
"N.n..no." Her voice was scratchy and weak. "No, Luis. The baby isn't yours." She quickly looked back down at TJ, knowing he'd see right through her lie if he looked in her eyes.
A hurt look took over Luis' face and a feeling of lose. He could have sworn the child was his. He WANTED the child to be his. Plus, he knew Sheridan and she wasn't the type to sleep around. He didn't know whether or not to believe her and the baby's paternity. "Are you sure? I mean... how far along are you?"
She paused a moment before answering. If she told him eight months, he'd know she was lying. What was one more lie? She'd be out of Harmony by the time she had the baby anyway. "Seven months..." she said quietly. It was killing her to lie to him, but she knew she had to for her baby's sake.
Luis averted his gaze from her. He didn't want her to see how hurt he was, how betrayed he felt. She used him. Like she had told him in the Youth Center only a year ago -- he was her 'boy toy'. That's all he was. She had her fun with him, then threw him out in the cold. Left him and moved on to another man. How could he have fallen in love with someone like that? His pride wasn't about to let him show his anguish.
Little TJ's eyes shot open and he let out a hungered wail. Sheridan quietly rocked him. "Shhh..." she offered, lullingly.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing to my baby!" Hank's voice teasingly broke the sound of the crying baby as he walked up beside Sheridan, placing with hand on her shoulder, with a huge grin on his face. "Sheridan... Beth called me and told me you were in town! We missed you!" He gave her a friendly kiss on the cheek. Sheridan looked at him in amazement as he took the sobbing baby out of her arms.
"Your baby?" she questioned.
"Of course, MY baby! Hence the name, Treavor James BENNETT." He smiled proudly at his son, then looked back at Sheridan. "Who'd you think was is father -- Sam??" He grinned teasingly at her and then held the kid up, as if he were on display. "Come on, doesn't he look just like is old man?"
"Only in your dreams, buddy." Luis forced a smile at his best friend. "He looks just like his mother."
"Sure, whatever!" Hank was in complete denial. "Speaking of his mother, it looks like someone is hungry. I'll catch you two later. And thanks for watching him for me, man."
"No problem, Hank." Luis spoke, but his thoughts and his gaze were still on Sheridan. She watched as Hank walked off with the baby. She couldn't believe it. She had been so wrong. One would think she would learn not to jump to conclusions by now. Thanks to her assuming, she had lied to Luis. She almost felt horrible, but she couldn't very well admit to it now. No, it was better this way. That still didn't change the fact Luis was a lying, manipulating, user. Every time she thought of him the replay of him speaking of 'getting rid' of her ran through her mind. No, this was for the best.
"Sheridan..." Luis attempted to speak to her again.
"Look Luis, we have nothing to talk about." She stood up, and grabbed her purse, feeling the tears burning to escape. Luis felt betrayal like he never imagined possible as he watched her walk away from him, towards the door. He stood up.
"Sheridan! Wait!"
Sheridan heard his voice echo as she walked out of the Book Cafe, into the rain. The tears fell down, like floodgates opening, and soon started to mix in with the raindrops. She hastily put up her umbrella and continued walking down the street. She lied to him. She had lied to the man she loved. Maybe he had treated her rotten, but she still loved him. She loved him no matter what. What had she done? She was utterly confused -- it was all too much for her to bare.
Chapter 6
Luis sat alone in the Book Cafe. A dumbfounded expression took over his face as he looked off at the door and tried to decode what had just happened. The minute Sheridan walked back into his life, he lost her again. Why? Why did God hate him so much? What did he do to deserve this? He let out a gruff, aggravated sigh as rubbed his hand on his forehead trying to process everything.
"Luis? Is everything okay?" Beth's concerned voice perked up from behind. Luis moved his arm across the table, as he turned around to look at her. Bang. The cell phone fell to the floor hard, cracking the back. "Damnit..." Luis muttered under his breath as he stood up and retrieved the phone. "Sheridan..." he whispered, staring at the inanimate object.
Beth stared at him worriedly. "What happened Luis?"
"Ah, nothing." His voice filled with frustration as he stared at the silver cell phone.
"Listen. Beth. I'm going to go get some paperwork done at the Youth Center... When Mama comes in, tell her I had to go... something came up. Tell her I'll be home for dinner."
Ever since Sheridan left, Luis had found himself escaping his problems by burying himself in work. Beth knew this, and hated seeing him that way. Yet, there wasn't much she could do but offer her friendship whenever she could. It was apparent Luis wasn't in the mood to "chat" so Beth decided to let it be.
"Okay, Luis." She smiled at him. "If you need anything, you know where I am."
He forced out a smile. "Thank you Beth..."
"Anytime..." With that, Beth continued wiping down a table as she watch him exit the Cafe.

Sheridan hurried down the street in the rain. She walked down a ways until the Pizza Shop to the right caught her eye. The rain was starting to come down harder and she knew she had to go somewhere dry. The Pizza Shop was a perfect place -- she could ease her hunger and then call a cab to go home.
Music sounded in Sheridan's ears as she walked through the door. The place smelt of smoke coming from the 'smoking section' on her left. The smell turned Sheridan's stomach and the noise filling the restaurant made her feel ill. The illness she felt from the stench made her decide to just have a soda while waiting for her cab.
Across the room from the booth she sat at was a sight she would have never in her wildest dreams imagined possible. Seated at a table for two was Luis' little brother Miguel with Madison. Madison Victoria Crane (or Maddy, as Sheridan called her) -- her precious little niece -- Julian and Ivy's youngest daughter. From where Sheridan was seated, it looked as though they were deep in conversation, and a serious one at that. She observed the way her darling niece gazed into his deep brown eyes. That look seemed all too familiar to Sheridan. As they leaned towards each other, Miguel sweetly placed a small red rose behind Maddy's ear and placidly placed a tender kiss on her lips. A smile formed on Sheridan's lips. They looked like a little version of herself and Luis -- and literally too. Madison had inherited the Crane's features -- Sheridan's mother's features. She looked identical to Sheridan when she was her age, the sweet age of sixteen.
Sheridan watched on in amazement -- not so amazed that Miguel and Maddy had obviously fallen for each other, but the fact that her brother was allowing his youngest daughter to date a "local". Or did he not know? Sheridan ponder the possibility. It wouldn't be the first time Madison went against her family -- she unfortunately took after her favorite aunt in that area as well -- being headstrong and stubborn was neither of their best virtues.
In a matter of minutes, Sheridan's attention was no longer focused on the young couple across the room, but rather on the pain she was experiencing in her lower abdomen. She reached her right hand down to her stomach, and silently took a deep breath trying to relieve the discomfort.
Slowly, she made her way into the restroom. Once inside, her left hand gripped onto the sink, holding herself up, as her other hand immediately moved to her lower back where the pain seemed to have shifted. She took deep breaths as the pain came to a halt. She needed to go home and she needed to go home now. She needed rest. All this stress had to be bad for the baby -- if only she hadn't seen Luis today! Sheridan wanted to kick herself for going into that Book Cafe. It only complicated things more.
She dabbed a wet paper towel over her forehead, ridding herself of the perspiration caused by her recent scenario. Her hands quickly searched through her purse. She needed to get home. Her hands roamed the bottom, searching every inch. Where was her phone? She frustratedly dumped all the contents of the purse onto the counter. Moving every item around, she still couldn't find the damn thing. "Where is it?!" she cried out, continuing her endless search. She paused for a moment, thinking back on the last place she took it out -- the Book Cafe. No... she couldn't have left it there. What if he was still there? Sheridan placed a hand on her stomach weighing her options. She needed her phone.
*******************
The wind blew hard against Sheridan's face as she walked outside. The rain was even heavier now, and the wind stronger. Sheridan fought the blowing wind as she walked down the road, heading to the Book Cafe. A strong gush of wind came, nearly knocking Sheridan to the ground. She instantly remembered the hurricane warnings. Whatever possessed her to go out anyway? She should have listened to Ethan when he told her to rest. But, no -- she had to be stubborn, as usual.
Another sluice of wind hit Sheridan, and she found shelter from a nearby tree. It was hard to see through the rain, but in the foggiest night she would recognize the building that stood before her. The Youth Center. So many memories of Luis resided there. She swallowed hard, thinking of Luis. She couldn't face him again tonight, she just couldn't. What was she going to do? She needed a phone... she needed to call a cab... or call Ethan. Call someone! She just knew she needed to get home right away -- something wasn't sitting well with her.
She stared off at the Youth Center as the rain came tumbling down. The key! That's it! She could use the spare key she had from her days of community service at the Youth Center and go inside to use the phone. It would be a good place to get dried up and she could wait there until the cab came. 'Perfect.' Sheridan thought to herself, as she walked up to the building, and pulled out the key.
********************
Luis sat at his desk in the office. He tried to the best of his ability to keep his mind on his paperwork, but it kept drifting off to Sheridan. The room was dark, except for the little lamp on his desk. He was in no mood for a lot of light, in fact, he was in no mood for anything. Depression filled his eyes as he stared at the little framed picture of her, beneath the lamp.
*********************
Sheridan made her way inside, quietly closing the door behind her. She had seen no cars in the parking lot, but of course it was getting dusky and it was hard to see in through the rain. She had to make sure no one was in there. She looked around the black foyer and found no trace of anyone in the empty building.
After hanging her wet raincoat on the coat rack, she gazed around the dark room. She inhaled and took peace in the quite, dark room. Moving around carefully, she searched for the light on the wall. She couldn't quite remember where the light switch was in the foyer, but she knew it was somewhere around there. Her hand searched the wall and all of a sudden hit something to the floor. Oh, no! The picture came crashing down to the floor and the glass shattered into a million pieces. Sheridan quickly moved to the ground, picking up the broken frame.
********************
The shattering of glass sounded through Luis' ears. "What the hell was that?!" Luis jumped out of his chair.
"I could have SWORN I locked the front door..." He moved back over to the desk, pulling open the top drawer. The revolver sat on top of a small stack of papers. He swiftly grabbed it and held on tight, turning off the little lamp on his desk. Ever so quietly, he left the office, walking out into the foyer. He saw the shadow of the figure over by the door. He slowly meandered over to the person, gun raised, ready to shoot if need be. When he finally approached the intruder, he tackled the person off guard, knocking her to the ground.
********************
Sheridan was staring down at the broken picture in her hands. This couldn't be good. She wanted to come in and leave without anyone knowing she had been there. Now she'd have to explain the whole thing to Luis. She let out a little sigh. Then, out of nowhere, someone tackled her to the ground! She let out a high-pitched screech as she fell, grabbing hold of her stomach by instinct. "Please don't hurt me!" She cried out, trying to make out who the attacker was on top of her. Sheridan's eyes widened. Luis... Oh my God... it was Luis!
Chapter 7
The high pitched squeal shot straight through Luis' ears. He stared down at the woman who lay beneath him, eyes widened in surprise.
"Sheridan?!" Luis quickly rolled over to the side of her. "My God! Sheridan, are you all right?" He was soon on his knees, dropping his gun, and placed a hand behind her back, helping her sit up. Worriedly, he began examining the woman in the dark. "Sheridan, I didn't hurt you, did I? God, Sheridan, I'm so sorry..." He continued, apologetically.
"No... no... I'm fine. Really." Recovering from her initial shock, she started to her feet. He stood fast, offering his help, as she took hold of his hand for support while standing.
As his thoughts began to clear, he couldn't for the life of him figure out why she was there to begin with. "Sheridan, what the hell are you doing here, anyway?! Wandering around in the dark... you could have been hurt... God, I could of shot you!" He fumed, more angry at himself than at her.
"I.I..." she paused for a moment, trying to think of a rational reason for her being there. Truthfully, she had forgotten her actual purpose for coming. "The phone!" She remembered at last. "I... I needed my phone... I needed A phone... to go home... and well, it was raining... and this was the closest place... the key... I just... I let myself in..." Luis' eyes searched hers, trying to make sense in her ramblings. "I'm sorry!" She finally blurted out.
"Whoa... slow down. It's okay." He placed a reassuring hand on her arm. "I'm afraid I found your phone, but... well, I accidentally dropped it and it cracked. I'll replace it, don't worry." He stared at her concerned. Something wasn't right. Something was bothering her -- she looked very uncomfortable. "Are you sure I didn't hurt you?"
She didn't seem to hear him, because her focus was on the slight pain settled in her stomach. She reached her arm out to the wall, resting all her weight up against it. Her hand rubbed in circular motions on her lower abdomen, and she silently prayed that the pain wouldn't worsen.
"Sheridan?" He tried to get her to respond by gently tugging at her arm. "Sheridan, what's wrong? Is it the baby?" He looked on, worry filling his eyes.
"N..No... I'm fine, Luis. I... I.. just have to get home."
"Sheridan. Look, you're obviously not fine. Let me take you to the hospital."
"No, Luis!" She protested. "I AM fine. I don't need your help."
"Of course not, Sheridan. Isn't that the way it always is? You NEVER need my help... just like in Paris... and with Antoine at the cabin. You didn't need my help then either, did you Sheridan?" His voice was firm and he wasn't about to give in. It was clear to him something was wrong, and he wasn't letting her go home by herself.
"Damnit, Luis! You always have to be right, don't you?"
"No, Sheridan. I'm afraid that's you. You are so stubborn that you're willing to risk the health of your own baby because you won't admit that I'm right!" He suddenly stopped, realizing they were getting nowhere arguing. His voice softened. "Come on Sheridan... please. Arguing is getting us nowhere. You obviously need help and I'm not letting you go anywhere alone in this condition..."
An adamant look conquered Sheridan's face, proving to Luis she wasn't letting him win this time. Her determination strengthened with each one of Luis' pleads for her to stay. With a swift move of the arm, she grabbed her coat and started putting it on.
"Sheridan... will you please just stop and think rationally for a moment?" Rationally?! She was thinking 'rationally'! Deciding to ignore his pleas, she continued buttoning up her coat. Scooping up her umbrella, she made her way to the door.
"Sheridan, stop!" Luis was tagging along behind her. She wanted out, and she wanted it as fast as she could get it. Hastily, she pushed through the heavy glass door and stepped into the pouring rain. Rain. It was seeming to become her worst enemy. Couldn't it just stop for an hour? God, what she'd give for it to stop long enough for her to find her car in the mists of the nearby parking lot.
Reaching the bottom of the stairwell, she found she couldn't move any farther. The pain began to increase again as it shot right through her lower back. A cry escaped her lips, hands racing to her back for support. The rain splattered against her face and she felt weak in the knees. Her hand grabbed the railing for support, the other fighting the rain to message her back.
Luis watched on in horror. Why wouldn't she listen to him, damnit?! His hand grabbed her arm while his eyes tried to focus on her through the rain. "Sheridan, this has gone too far." Before she could answer him, he was scooping her up in his arms, making his way up the stairs. Sheridan was in too much pain to fight it, so instead she buried her head in his chest trying to forget everything. Even with the rain beating down hard on her, it felt good being wrapped in his strong arms again.
Once inside, Luis laid Sheridan on the soft couch in his office. Sheridan's whole body was shaking -- not only from the pain, but the Youth Center was still chilly from the AC Luis had on earlier and the wet clothes she wore were clinging to her, making it all the more cold. Luis kneeled beside her and gently brushed a wet strand of hair out of her eyes. His hands grabbed hold of her freezing ones and he gently rubbed one of hers between his, in attempt to warm it up. He gazed at her, eyes filled with love. She looked so scared and vulnerable and he just wished he could make all her pain disappear with the snap of his fingers.
"Just take a deep breath. Everything will be fine -- I promise. You're in labor, Sheridan. I'm going to get you to the hospital, okay?"
"No!" She spurted out between a deep breaths. "I'm not... in... labor. False labor... It's.. it's.. False.." She gasped as the pain strengthened. "I... can't be!"
If the situation hadn't been so serious, Luis knew he would have died from laughter at the scene. How could she deny being in labor?
"Sheridan... just calm down... this isn't good for the baby." The baby... the thought of Sheridan having another man's baby sent a pain through his heart. Luis shook the thought from his mind. That wasn't important now, what was important was that she was having the baby and he had to figure out how to convince her she was before she was holding the child in her arms as proof.
"The baby's coming Sheridan... I'm afraid you don't have much say in the matter." He looked on worriedly, continuing to stroke her wet hair.
"No..." Sheridan shook her head in pain. "Not yet... I.... I still have... I still have a month!"
A month? The thought lingered in Luis' mind. A month? She told him she was seven months pregnant! Had she lied to him? Or was she just confused in her delirious state? Then the thought occurred to him -- if she was eight months pregnant, this child could very well be his...
Chapter 8
Luis watched on for a moment in a state of confusion. He studied Sheridan. Her breathing increased with the contraction.
"It's too soon..." She let out a slight hint of what was a whimper. "too soon..."
He steadied her arms with his grip and forced her to look him in the eyes. "Sheridan, you have to calm down!" He was worried sick -- if anything happened to Sheridan or the baby he'd never forgive himself.
"Premature labor is common, Sheridan... everything will be fine, don't worry." He offered reassurance, not just for Sheridan, but for himself as well. "I'm going to go call the hospital and get you something dry to change in to, okay? I need you to just breathe and try to relax... focus on something to take your mind off the pain." His hand hadn't left hers the whole time, and his other hand remained on her cheek as well.
She squeezed his hand tightly and nodded her head, taking slow, deep breaths as the contraction came to a hault. "Don't leave me, Luis..." she begged.
"I'll be right back, I promise. I would never leave you..." With that, he kissed her wet forehead, stood up, and left the office.
**************
The rain banged against the windshield of Luis' truck. It was so loud, Luis was sure the window would crack any second. He kept turning the key, praying the damn thing would start up. No luck. His truck would pick the worse time to die. He got out of the truck, slamming the door behind him. He traipsed through the flooded parking lot, back to the Youth Center. What was he going to do? He needed to get Sheridan to the hospital fast. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed 911. A fuzzy noise filled his ear. Damnit, he had the worst luck!
He flipped on the lights in the locker room. Walking towards a locker, he started stripping off his wet apparel. A nice, dry pair of navy shorts and a white T-shirt laid folded in the locker. He quickly changed into them and moved over to a nearby pay phone. He listened for a dial tone. Nothing. The phones were dead! Great. This was just great. It looked as though the Youth Center would be greeted with a new visitor tonight. He sighed and searched through the closet. A wail filled Luis' ears. Sheridan. He grabbed the things beside him and dashed out of the locker room, towards the office.
Sheridan let out a painful weep. "Luis!" It was the only thing she could think of to say, well other than a few choice words you wouldn't normally hear from her mouth. Where was he? He had told her he'd be right back! It had been a good fifteen minutes and he was nowhere to be seen. Her water had just broken. The baby was coming! There was no denying it now. All her ideas of not trusting Luis flew out the window once her contractions became stronger. Now, she wanted him with her more than anything. She wanted him to be there with her when their baby came into the world. She wanted to tell him the baby was his, but would she regret it later? The pain was too strong to think rationally, or to think at all for that matter.
Luis rushed in the room with an oversized T-shirt, some towels, and a pillow in hand. "Sheridan, I'm right here!" He moved over to the couch and kneeled beside her once again, taking her hand in his. Slowly, he helped her sit up a little. She grabbed onto her stomach with her hands and continued her breathing she had learned in Lamaze class.
Gently, Luis dabbed a small towel over Sheridan's forehead, wiping away the mixture of sweat and rain. He started unbuttoning her shirt, pulling the wet thing completely off her. She didn't seem to mind the fact he was removing her clothes, but that was probably because of the intense pain she was experiencing or it just felt good to get the damp things off. After removing all of the drenched items, he helped her put on the large shirt.
As her contraction subsided, she found the air to speak.
"Did you call the hospital?" She muttered, worriedly.
Luis paused for a moment. The worried look on Sheridan's face made his heart ache. He wasn't going to let anything happen to Sheridan or the baby and he wanted her to know that. I mean, he had delivered Pat's baby last year. This shouldn't be too hard, right? No... it was different, and Luis knew so. This was Sheridan. Sheridan... HIS Sheridan. The woman he loved more than life itself. So much more was at risk.
"Sheridan..." His voice was quiet and calm. "The phones lines are down and my car won't start. We're stuck here..." He waited to see her reaction. She stared at him blankly and he decided to continue speaking.
"Don't worry though. Everything will be alright, I promise. I mean, we delivered a baby together before, right? And we can do it again..." He felt tears burning in the back of his eyes, sensing her fear. He knew he had to get her through this and that meant that he had to stay strong for her (even though the fear of something happening to her was eating away at him inside).
Sheridan choked on a few tears and forced a smile out. 'I love you' she thought -- if only she could bring herself to say the words outloud. A frown soon came to her lips. "Luis... what if..." she trailed off, with the worst thoughts filling her mind.
"What if..." her voice was cracking and barely understandable. "What if something goes wrong..." A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Wrong? No, Sheridan... I won't let anything go wrong. I won't let anything happen to you..." He fought back his own tears, but one escaped his eye no matter how hard he tried. He couldn't let Sheridan see, so to cover up, he bent over to pick up the pillow and carefully placed it behind Sheridan's back for more comfort.
Sheridan still couldn't shake the feeling that maybe she'd hemorrhage like her mother had. The thought pained her. She didn't want her baby growing up without a mother to love her and be there for her, the way she had. At least her child could have the father she deserved, and she planned to insure that. Luis had to know.
Tears streamed down Sheridan's face. "Luis... if... if something happens to me..." She felt him wrap his strong arms around her, causing her to cry a little more.
"Sheridan, please stop this -- it isn't good for the baby." He interrupted her, gently kissing away the tears on her cheeks.
"No, Luis!" She begged for him to listen. "Please... if something happens to me, our baby... I just want to make sure she's okay."
Luis' eyes shot open. OUR baby? Had she just said 'OUR baby'?! Luis didn't want to jump to any conclusions.
"You mean YOUR baby..." he corrected her, quietly.
"No, Luis... I mean OUR baby." She looked at him tearily.
Luis felt his heart pound. 'Our baby'. HIS baby. He slowly placed a hand on Sheridan's stomach and looked up at her stunned. "My baby...?" She nodded her head slowly and touched his hand. "I'm sorry Luis..." she apologized softly. He was too shocked to accept the apology. His baby! He just stared at her stomach in amazement. He was going to be a father!
