Swords,
Etiquette Dinner
music: "Dreaming With Tears In My Eyes" by U2

Yesterday morning, I rolled out of bed, and Kevin, Steve, Henry, Dan, Brendan and I all went up to Manchester, New Hampshire to the Birka SCA Marketplace event. It was definitely surreal. We all went dressed as characters from Lord of the Rings; i was Legolas. They were ALL in costume, it was so trippy. They were all selling their wares too, they had all this leatherwork, and ironwork, and pewterwork, and beadwork, and whatever you could think of that's craftsy. And they had weapons and dirks and maces and everything! I wanted one, but i have no money. So i'm good.

I came into it with a bit of reservation... I half-expected to see a bunch of wicca and neo-pagan. It turns out there were a few of those, but the vast majority seemed just your average American with a strange hobby. For a while before coming, since Henry invited me and told me i would have to dress up, i was dreading it, cause costuming didn't sound all that fun.. But i got a dagger and a bow and arrows to wear, so it made it all better. I looked like Robin Hood, some people commented. So yeah, it was a surreal experience again, coming back to Drew hall, and changing into t-shirt and jeans. It's like your first time roller skating, when you get off the ice, and you have to get your land legs again?

So after shaking off that feeling, i got into my nice clothes, and called up Chels, and Jesse and I and her rode over to the PDR in Katie's car. Chels was very charming, she had on this gold-yellow blazer, and she looked pretty good in my cowboy hat as well! Like a mobster. And it would have been perfect if she had turned over the table and took out a Tommy and started blasting people, cause she looked really mobstah'. Actually not perfect. But you know what i mean.

It was a cool dinner. The director of the Center for Student Development (CSD) hosted the it, and for the first 20 minutes or so, we had a question and answer time, about what kinds of things you have to remember at a fancy dinner. Like what forks and cups to use, and how to treat your date properly and with etiquette, and how to use the napkin, and lots of things.

So the dinner was great! Jon Stacy and his date Erin, and Jesse and Katie joined Chels and I at our table. There was chicken and steak and red potatos, salad and vegetables, and Apple Crisp for dessert. We stayed maybe an hour after the initial "instructional time", then a bunch of us hiked up to Annie's at Tavilla Hall -- the place Byers calls the 'hospitality apartment.' That's about accurate; life there contrasts with all other apartment life on campus. Fulton can't brag of any social life. Neither the rest of Tavilla. And i don't think anyone's ever heard of 'Bromley.' We played Nerps, or whatever it's called, which you play with a deck for each player.. also this 'Danish' game with celebrities and stuff.

It was such a great night, to top the morning off with, and make it all a really great day. Then i guess i just read more Data Structures homework till bedtime.

Today (Sunday) i read more homework, then typed this up. Soon i guess i'll go to anime club, and see what they have playing. We all know the Panthers own the Super Bowl, so i'll watch that on and off. Oh yeah, there's the kegger party for that. The root beer is usually good, i'll go to that for a bit. But i have homework.

Yeah. I got my hw done. It's 2 am. We watched Lupin III, that was a drop dead gorgeous movie. I was a fan. Later, there were parties all around campus. Because of the Super Bowl, not cause of Lupin III. Lots of keggers. The Pats won. It was more boring than a lot of games this season. Except when they couldnt kick a field goal to save their life.

I went and visited all the parties as an excuse to not see the game. ;-) I remember that time a bunch of us went down to Newberry Comics, and i was all dressed up, and i got a Boston CD for cheap, and Dustin got a Yao Ming collector's figure. "Can you write check?" Oh and tonight, Brendan and I did a gravity-defying experiment. It got caught in the trees, thankfully. Gnight.
