Joseph's Story
Joseph is our second child. Our first, Gracie, died just after birth. Visit her site here.
I had been having contractions for several weeks but on the Thursday before Joseph was born the pains changed. They hurt more in the back than just a pressure in the stomach. By Sunday afternoon I decided I needed to go into the hospital to see what was going on. We arrived at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS at 5pm Sunday evening. When the Dr checked me I was 3 cm dialated. At 8pm I was still only 3 cm so they booted us out of the hospital. My husband, Lloyd, and I decided we'd go out to dinner and fill up with gas then decide whether we were going to drive all the way home (an hour drive) or stay at my ?mom's house overnight. At dinner the contractions were still coming 3-5 minutes apart and were quite painful. As my husband was filling up our truck something changed. Suddenly the pain increased imensely and started coming more often. I think I've heard it called "transitioning". Anyway, I didn't want to get kicked out of the hospital again (it's kind of embarassing to "think" you're in labor) so we decided we'd go to my mom's house. We were only there probably 15 minutes before I told Lloyd, "Hospital. Now." in the short time between contractions. We arrived Back at the hospital at 10:30, got the epidural at 11:40, had the baby at 12:34 after 2 pushes. Quick and easy... of course, I wouldn't have said so at the time.
After the birth
Lloyd got to cut the cord but they took the baby immediately to a warming table and gave him oxygen. There had been some meconium in his bag of water (baby had a bowel movement while still inside me). The Dr's were afraid Joseph had swallowed some of it. I was finally able to hold him about an hour after birth. He was still being given extra oxygen at the time though. They took him to the Neonatal Special Care Unit (NSCU) where he spent the next 3 days. He recieved antibiotics through an IV in his hand (poor baby). Finally they deemed him healthy enough to go home. We had our baby. There was a part of me that never believed I'd actually get to bring a baby home. He's our miracle, our blessing from God.
