When pursuing these beautiful fish you have to be prepared. Whether you are shooting streamers to rainbows that are measured in pounds or roll casting a size 24 trico to rising brownies in a spring creek, you have to be ready for anything. At one moment you may be on the banks of a small stream casting to 7 in. trout but in the next pool, rifle, or run there may lay a fish of a lifetime. Most anglers prefer fly casting to these breathtaking beauties. Flyfishing for trout can bring suprises and varies in differnt areas of the world. Trout fishing can mean shooting streamers to big browns in Argentinia or casting a small dry in a norhtern Michigan stream. Most Michiganders use a fly rod that is 7-9ft. in length and recommended for 1-6 weight line, depending on the conditions they are facing. Sometimes a smaller rod is an advantage in tight creeks but a longer rod may be more suitable on bigger waters. Trout can make long runs but don't copmpare to the power of a steelhead or salmon. Depending on where you are, a single action reel is will usually provide you with enough strength to bring fish in. A disc drag model may be morea acceptable if you plan to wrestle the big boys! There are many choices in flylines when pursuing trout. Floating lines are the most popular, but on larger rivers, a sink tip or sinking like may help if you need to get down. Trout can be very line orrint, and go with the smallest tippet you can get away with.
