THREE LIONS A TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT TEAM
1966 - World Cup Final (Wembley) The greatest year in the history of English Football ENGLAND 4 - 2 GERMANY (aet) Hurst (3) Haller Peters Weber No doubt, this is the game that all England fans remember, even if they werent alive when the match was played! 2-1 and into injury time, England had one hand on the Jules Rimet trophy until the Germans nicked an equaliser. However, thankyou for doing that, because without it Geoff Hurst would have never gone on to score the only (yes, the only) ever world cup final hatrick...''they think it's all over, it is now'' as Kenneth Wolstenhome famously said, and as Nobby danced and the great Bobby Moore lifted that trophy, England knew that they were the best team in the world.
1990 - World Cup (Italy) So close to reaching another final but along came penalties We were almost there again...almost in the final. Unfortunately penalties were in our way as usuall and we went out. But every cloud has its silver lining and Phsycho's was to come six years later.
1996 - Euro '96 (Wembley) Football's coming home Another classic England vs Germany encounter where our boys just failed to win (don't worry, we know what happened in Munich!) In front of 80,000 England supporters singing ''3 lions'', it seemed as if after 30 years of hurt we were finally going to win something. No. But we tryed hard and played well, Shearer allowing us the chance to dream after 3 minutes with his headed goal. But they had to equalise didn't they and so after kuntz levelled, extra time came and went (with Macca hitting the post and Gazza missing the ball by a lick of paint) and once more it was penalties. By now we all know that the words penalties and England don't mix too well, though the legend that is Stuart Pearce deserves a mention for his bravery and unstoppable penalties in this competition. However, once more penalties ended our dream and Germany went on to win Euro '96. (but as we said earlier...Munich 2001 was to come!)

1998 - World Cup 1998 (France) The epic match that was England versus Argentina and once more how close we were. This unforgetable match will live long in the minds of not only England fans, but football fans the world over.It began with Batistuta appearing to fall over, but the refree deemed it a penalty and like usual England were unfortuanately behind. However, not long after, the refree Kim Milton Nielson appeared (yes, appeared) to have got himself back in England's good books, giving yet another penalty, this time in favour of wonderboy Michael Owen, allowing Shearer to level up. Not a bad start in terms of excitement then!. Of course little Michael didn't want to stop there and as he danced through a sea of blue Argentinian players the England fans sensed a goal....and of course it was 2-1...bring on Holland! But the drama was not to end (in fact we are still on page one of this novel), as those Argentinians decieved us with an annoyingly simple yet clever free kick to level the scores. Oh well...that was half time and surely the 2nd half couldnt be as good. No, it wasn't. Sir David Beckham was sent off but our boys did us proud and deserved to win, holding out against 11 men Argentina through extra time and all. After Sol Campbell's perfectly good goal was ruled out (does anybody know why?) it went to penalties which we won't dwell on too much...Yet again...it didn't go our way...but the team and supporters who sang ''the great escape'' throughout did the nation proud.
2001 - World Cup Qualifier (Munich) The unforgetable summer's evening when England triumphed away, against Germany, not by one, two or three, but by FIVE goals to one! What can we say but 5 (FIVE) (FUNF) goals to 1. Our hats go off to Owen, Gerrard (what a nutmeg), Heskey, Beckham and all of the other great's that played on that glorious evening. Hero's one and all. Oh, did we mention the score? Ok. 5-1.
2001 - World Cup Qualifier (Old Trafford) After the euphoria of Germany, it seemed to be all for nothing until the great man himself stood up and...well you know the rest. They say Sven is a lucky manager and after our ups and downs through the years, we deserved our bit, so when David Beckham stood up in the last minute to take that free kick, we all knew what was going to happen. He was going to miss right? Wrong! This time, we were on our way to the World Cup!
