About Our Classes
Success is getting up one more time
than you fall down.

   The thrust of the Emotional Support classes is two-fold.  First, we strive to foster success and to reduce anxiety for students, as they learn to work effectively and appropriately on independent and small group tasks and projects.  As much of our work as practical is hands-on or interactive to permit the students to move about the room and to interact with each other as well as with the adults in the room.  Secondly as the students work on the content of the classes, we attempt to stengthen their academic skills and to expand their basic funds of knowledge.

     English and science are slated for the first semester this year.  The reading and literary focus of our English class is short fiction and poetry.  Along with this study, we will continue to review, to reinforce and to enhance vocabulary and writing skills.  The science class, this year, focuses on earth science.  We will begin our study with a unit on volcanoes and rocks.  Following this, we will move on to the atmosphere, the solar system and the universe.  Much of this study will feature investigations of applications of the topics as we focus on them.

     Social studies and math are scheduled for the second semester.  In an attempt to expand our understanding of our own nation, the social studies class will focus on significant events in the history the United States and the development of our national culture.  Math will continue to stress "real life" math issues such as applications of problem-solving skills, computational skills, consumer skills, and applying, manipulating and calculating with conventional units of measure.

     In addition to the Core Academic classes, Skills for Success is offered both semesters.  The thrust of this class is toward assisting our students to learn to accept themselves and others, to enhance their personal and social skills and to encourage them to make safe and realistic choices.  Students in this class may be students who are in the E.S. core courses or other Emotional Support students who are attempting to succeed in ACES or regular education classes but who continue to need extra personal or social supports.  The class will include team building activities, challenge activities and sessions with and access to mental health and transition specialists.

     As students begin to gain the personal and academic skills needed to succeed in ACES or regular education classes, they are encouraged to attempt these more academically challenging classes.  After all, the goal of the program is not to confine students to a single classroom but rather to assist them to grow beyond it and to experience all that their school has to offer them.
Not to know is bad;
not to wish to know is worse.
