Here are meeting summaries for the months of September & October.
The Board and Advisors met for the first time for the year. We discussed possible activities, projects, and volunteering opportunities, as well as ways to improve communication within the club (we are now using announcements, signs in the Commons and in the art rooms, e-mail for those who have it, the Yahoo! club, and the website). We went through old Art Club records and papers to update and see if we could get any additional ideas. We then decided what to do at the first meeting: have a general introduction (brief) and make a paper mural outside of the art rooms. Finally, signs were decorated and hand-outs drawn out, plus we planned a booth for the Open House that evening.
There was a brief introduction (I figured everyone just wanted to hear the important stuff, not listen to me talk for hours.) in which I introduced the Board and mentioned some ideas and possible activities for the year. I also indicated that most basic information could be found on the hand-outs, and I passed around a sheet for those interested in volunteering to sign up (it's posted on the Art Club Door- Room 147). Then, we worked on the paper mural which you can see outside of rooms 146, 147, and 148. We also handed out the hand-outs, which contain the following information (in case you didn't get one):
You might have seen the result of our last meeting around the school! We drew caricatures of teachers from their pictures, cut them out and glued them to the bodies of skeletons, vampires, black cats, ghosts, etc. as a Halloween surprise! It was pretty amusing, and most of the teachers loved it! There were also three announcements:
1) For those of you who are volunteering oriented, Brookwood Retirement Center has expressed an interest in the Art Club visiting their facility once a month to teach arts 'n crafts sessions to their elderly residents. More information will be forthcoming on this, but if you're interested, please e-mail [email protected]. There will also be a club meeting solely for volunteering information, so be sure to listen for the date and time of that meeting.
2) The staff of Leaves of Thought, Sycamore's literary magazine, is looking for artists to submit drawings and other artwork for the two issues they publish during the year. They are also looking for artists willing to illustrate some of the written pieces (essays, short stories, poetry, etc.) for both issues (Winter & Spring). Artwork can be submitted to the yellow envelopes posted outside of either English office. If you need more information, or are interested in illustrating, you can speak to Marissa or e-mail [email protected]
3) avesonline.org, the SHS website, is looking for submissions of artwork to its new visual arts section. The section will display paintings, photos, drawings, prints, ceramics, etc. Submit a photograph of your work with your name & the work's title, or let the website staff know you have artwork you'd like to share so they can drop by your art class and take a digital photo of it.
The Board and Advisors met to discuss the volunteering opportunities to present to the club on October 18th, at the volunteering meeting. We also discussed and planned the activity for the regular meeting, which was pumpkin painting.
Pumpkin Painting! The club painted 60 of the minature pumpkins ("munchkins") from Pipkin's with acrylic paints. There was a quick lesson for those who had never worked with acrylics before at the beginning of the meeting.
Volunteering Meeting! We are going to Brookwood Retirement Center on Tuesday, November 14th to teach a craft session to the elderly- how to make snowglobes!
