As you explore the following pages, you will be introduced to many ideas and concepts
still alive within Traditional Paganism. Many of them will be very different, indeed alien,
to those which you perhaps take for granted as part of modern paganism.
This is hardly surprising - modern paganism, typified by wicca,
is essentially an urban phenomenon; traditional paganism, by contrast,
survives with its roots firmly in the sacred landscape of its ancestors.

One of the greatest differences to be understood is the difference in timescales between modern and traditional paganism. Increasingly, modern paganism, again most noticably typified by wicca, is moving towards an "instant gratification" approach in which a person appears to move from being a raw beginner one year to being a "third degree" something or other with titles, their own coven and an ancient "hereditary tradition" the next. In traditional paganism, however, bound as it is to the very land itself, things may change at a barely perceptible pace -the old ways remain largely unchanged and unseen by a pagan world whichhurries on to its next sabbat or festival, often oblivious to what the land is saying to them. Exploring this page cannot turn you into a traditional pagan any more than reading a few
"Wicca for Beginners" books can turn you in to a priest(ess), but it can give you a few things to take away and think about. And that's not a bad thing.
