Recently, the third season of the English dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh! anime hit the shores of America, airing on the Kids WB, and introducing a whole new variation to Yu-Gi-Oh!. In this variation, each duelist chose a monster from their deck to act as a sort of monster General known as a Deck Master, and depending upon which Deck Master that each duelist chose, they would be endowed with special abilities that could change the course of the duel. Inspired by this variation, I sought out to write a set of unofficial rules for it, so that myself and all others who enjoyed this variation of Yu-Gi-Oh! could unleash the power of Deck Masters just like those on the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime had.

Basically, Yu-Gi-Oh! "Deck Master" works the same way as the regular game except each duelist has a special effect or effects available to them depending on the monster that they choose to be their Deck Master. However, there are still a few other new rules that need to be stated for those who have not seen this variant on the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, and a few other new rules that need to be clarified to avoid confusion when playing this variant. This small section of my section outlines these two sets of rules.

The first thing to do when you're dueling in this variant, before you even shuffle your deck and draw your first five cards is to select a monster from your deck to be your Monster General, your Deck Master. You may select any tournament legal monster in, or not in, your deck to be your Deck Master. However, as it would be an obsessive chore to write Deck Master Abilities for every single  monster in the game, so I put the ones I've already got and you can send any requests to
[email protected].

Once you and your opponent each choose a monster to act as your Deck Master, you're almost ready to begin your Yu-Gi-Oh! "Deck Master" duel. First, however, you and your opponent must take your Deck Masters and move them to a special "Deck Master Starting Position" outside of the field. As long as your Deck Master is in its Deck Master Starting Position, it is not considered to be on the field, removed from play, in the hand, in the deck, in the Graveyard, or anywhere else, but its Deck Master Ability can still take effect. Once you and your opponent have moved your Deck Masters to their Deck Master Starting Positions, you and your opponent may now shuffle your decks, draw five cards, and begin your duel.

A Yu-Gi-Oh! "Deck Master" duel works almost exactly like a normal duel. It simply gives you and your opponent more options about what you each can and can't do, with all of these options revolving around the Deck Masters that you and your opponent select.

At any time, you can move your Deck Master into play, sometimes activating it's ability. Your Deck Master is the fastest thing, being able to summon at a Spell Speed of 4! Although, Deck Master Effects are only Spell Speed 2.

ButDeck Masters are not just good. They can be bad, too. You see, once you move your Deck Master into plaay, or "Deck Master Summon" it, it can be destoryed or removed from the game. If either of these happen, you lose the Duel. But, if a Deck Master is returned to the deck or hand, return it to the Deck Master Starting Position.

So, Deck Masters are great, just don't let them get destoryed, or you'll lose. It's a new level of stragety.

And for another level of risk, you can play with two. The "Double Deck Master System" is a favorite of mine, meaning that both Deck Masters must die to hand over the automatic win, and some Deck Masters may have Combination Abilities, or "Combos", Combos are listed in the deck master section as an abukuty in all caps and in a yellow color, like this: "
3 - DARK BURNING MAGIC". These often, for lack of a better term, rock.

Another possability is a face-down Deck Master, or a "Concealed Deck Master". You don't need to alert your opponent as to what your Deck Master is, but your Deck master must be flipped face-up, or "Revealed", before it's ability can be used.

And, in case you've seen it, I know Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! aslo has Deck Master information. I whole-heeartedly disagree with about 90% of their abilities. Rather the wording and choices of monster, but I aslo think some of the best abilites can be held by the non-holo monsters. So, enjoy Yami's Deck Master Lists, I, of course, think that this is the best site for Deck Master information on the net!
