Today 420 is used as a generic way of declairing one likes to use marijuana. No one knows when the earliest connotation of this term was employed. Many people believe one or more of the many spurious explanations that have since grown. Here are just a few and their relevence of truth. * 420 is the penal code section for marijuana use in California. NO, niether of our 50 states have any related 420 sections that have anything to do with bud. * It's the Los Angeles or New York radio code for the marijuana smoking in progress. NO, there is no 420 police radio code. * It's the number of chemical compounds in marijuana NO, If this were true, it would be dubbed 315, if memory serves. (hehehe) * April 20th is the date Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin died. NO, Morrison- July 3, Hendrix- September 18, Joplin- October 4. * April 20th is the best time to plant Marijuana. EHH... there is no best time, different climates in different countries decides that one. * Albert Hoffman took the firdst deliberate case of LSD at 4:20 on April 19th, 1943. YES, his lab notes back it up. But alas, this is still not the source just an oddball coincidence. * It's the code you send to your drug dealers pager. YES, Every drug dealer recognizes 420 as "gimme gooddies". * When the Greatful Dead toured, they always stayed in room 420. NO, says Greatful Dead Productions spokesperson Dennis McNally. "420" has slipped into a position of semi-respectability within the english lexicon. Various free-wheeling cities annually celebrate "hemp fests" on April 20th. There's a 420 record label in California, and a band called 420. Atlanta's Sweetwater Co. sells it's pale ale in supermarkets and opens it's doors to the public at 4:20 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. New York's 420 T ours sell low-cost travel tickets to the Netherlands and to Jamaica. Highway 420 radio broadcasts "music for the chemically enhanced". In Pulp Fiction, all but a few clocks are set at 4:20, HItler was born on April 20, 1889, and the massacre of 13 students at Columbine High School in Colorado took place on April 20, 1999. |
