Gladiator (Special Edition/ 2000)
Gladiator (2000) as Maximus, I just loved Gladiator, with the exception of close-ups on Joaquin Phoenix, The story is not only superbly told, but visually stunning. This film always reminds me of being on a roller-coaster, it moves so fast and your emotions run so high that when it's over you just want to run back in line and do it all over again. of course the rollercoaster doesn't usually make me cry like a baby, but anyone who has ever loved another person will be moved by this film.
Insider, The (1999) as Jeffrey
Wigand. This movie was truly powerful, mainly because
even as a paunchy older man, Russell Crowe exudes power
and self confidence. Even when his character is in
constant fear and his marriage is falling apart, you
don't neccessarily sympathize with him, but you
definetely want him to win his battle, and for his story
to be told.
Mystery, Alaska (1999) as John
Biebe, Sounds Page, As the
sheriff of a small Alaska town, and the backbone and
heart of it's hockey team, Russell shines, the moments he
shares with his on-screen wife are extremely satisfying,
in an emotional sense. You truly feel part of their bond.
Aside from that, this is just one of the funniest movies
made in recent years. Look for a moment between Burt
Reynold's on screen wife and daughter that is
unforgettably funny. Sign me up for the next flight out,
this is small town humor at it's best!
Breaking Up (1997) as Steve, Gallery this movie,
also starring Salma Hayek, is not dissimilar to watching
a trainwreck, with a gratuitous shower scene, of course.
It is much more a two man play than a movie, and if
you're not expecting it it can be distracting. Go into
this one ready for some head scratching and you will
probably enjoy it. It is nice to look at visually, but
the plot of these two people breaking up and making up
for two hours loses some luster.
L.A. Confidential (1997) as Bud
White. This Oscar nominated movie really does live up to
the hype. Plot twist after plot twist and an
extraordinarry ensemble cast make this film easy to watch
over and over despite it's raw subjects. Russell's turn
as Det. Bud White is gut wrenching. White watched his
father beat his mother to death as a child, and became a
cop to prevent such things. The emotional range, for all
of the characters, is amazing. I found myself in tears
more than once through the course of the movie, and still
do everytime I watch it.
No Way Back (1996) as Zack
Grant, This is actually a funny movie. Russell plays an
FBI agent who gets involved with the mafia when he sends
an untested agent undercover and she ends up murdering
everyone in the room. Throw in a hijacked plane, a
kidnapped stewardess and Zack's motherless son and you
get a lot of action, some hokey dialog and a lot of one
liners that will have you on the floor. Definetely worth
tracking down.
Virtuosity (1995) as SID 6.7,
Russell plays a computer program designed to train police
to track down killers in a virtual reality chair.
Programmed with the psyches of dozens of serial killers.
When the program's designer finds a way to bring him to
life one of the personalities sets about finishing some
business with the cop (Denzel Washington) that ended all
his fun. There's a lovely butt scene, a cameo by TOFOG on
the radio and a lot of action. I really liked this film,
it's silly, and predictable, but well worth the price of
admission.
Quick and
the Dead, The (1995) as Cort. Gallery Russell plays
a gunfighter turned priest in this Sharon Stone melodrama.
I found myself groaning about half a dozen times at the
cheesy dialog in this movie, and wouldn't recommend it as
a purchase, but it's worth a rental to see some beautiful
images of Russell, and even of a younger Leonardo
Dicaprio.
For the Moment (1994) as
Lachlan, Russell plays an Australian pilot training with
the Canadian armed services during the war. While at the
base he befriends the town prostitute, falls in love with
a friend's sister and raises an eybrow or two on the base.
This film is fun, passionate, and a bit corny. The ending
plays like a melodramatic theatre production, but it will
leave you in tears. Great Saturday night flick.
Love in Limbo (1993) as Arthur Baskin
Silver Stallion, The (1993) as
The Man. The Silver Stallion is a wonderful tale set in
rural Australia. The place is a farm far from town where
a writer tells her daughter the story of a silver bromby
that catches the eye of a man (played stoicly if silently
by Crowe) who hunts him determined to break him. The
story is moving and told in a way that both children and
adults will be moved by.
Romper Stomper (1992) as Hando.
This is one of the most disturbing films to ever make
it's way across the ocean. In a bleak look at the
skinheads of Australia, Russell plays the leader of a
ragtag group of neonazis who go around bashing asians,
drinking and having sex. Visually the movie is drab and
odd, emotionally it is draining. It is hard to identify
with the brainwashed characters in this film. Watch it
once, and then try not to let it seep into your
subconscience.
Late Show, The (1992) as Shirty, the Slightly Agressive Bear, TV Show
Brides of Christ (1991) as Dominic Maloney (TV Mini Series)
Hammers Over the Anvil (1991) as East Driscoll. In this sweet coming of age tale we see a young boy with braces on his legs struggle with a father who is convinced he will someday be healthy as an ox, watching his friend (Crowe) a rugged horse man fall in love with the older woman he is infatuated with, and watching his best friend slip away as he discovers the opposite sex. The film is both sexy and sad, but all in all a very good movie. I love the sweeping Australian scenery and the odd but lovable people of the small 1920's town. Be on the look out for a very naked Russell :)
Police Rescue (1990) as Constable Tom "Bomber" Young, in episode "Right Stuff, The"
